Interference fit of cementless tibial implants and the initial mechanical environment: A micro-CT and DVC study.

J Orthop Res

November 2024

Medical Device Research Institute, College of Science and Engineering, Flinders University, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.

During cementless total knee arthroplasty (TKA), an overlap between the resected tibia and the implant's geometry, termed interference fit, is introduced to facilitate primary stability and direct bone-implant contact. However, little is known about the actual interference achieved and the resulting mechanical response in the surrounding cancellous bone. The aim of this study was (1) to experimentally quantify the actual interference achieved for a commercially available cementless tibial implant and (2) to assess its effect on the post-impaction cancellous bone strain.

IL-18 biology in severe asthma.

Front Med (Lausanne)

November 2024

Department of Medicine, McMAster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada.

The role of interleukin-18 (IL-18) and inflammasomes in chronic inflammatory airway diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), has garnered significant attention in recent years. This review aims to provide an overview of the current understanding of IL-18 biology, the associated signaling pathways, and the involvement of inflammasome complexes in airway diseases. We explore the multifaceted role of IL-18 in asthma pathophysiology, including its interactions with other cytokines and contributions to both T2 and non-T2 inflammation.

Background: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) predominantly affects males across all ages; however, little is known about sex differences for other aspects of EoE.

Objective: To investigate associations between sex and clinical presentation, endoscopic features, treatment choice and response in EoE patients in real-world practice.

Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of the multicenter EoE CONNECT registry.

Introduction: Surgical removal of an impacted third molar is one of the most common oral surgical procedures performed in dental offices. The postoperative phase is often associated with severe inflammation. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are usually prescribed to manage postoperative discomfort.

In this study, we examined the effect of near future ocean acidification (OA) on the transcriptome of a sensory organ in contact with surrounding water, the tongue in adult European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) by mean of RNAseq experiment. We acquired a total of 14.1 Mb quality-trimmed reads covering 18,703 expressed genes from the tongue of fish reared from two generations at actual (pH 8.
