Concentrations of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), vanadium (V), and zinc (Zn) were measured in the muscle of 30 specimens of , captured on April 2018, in the Veracruz Reef System National Park (VRSNP), Veracruz, Mexico. Concentrations, in the samples, were quantified with atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS), after microwave digestion. Results of the mean concentration, in descending order were V = 7.3 ± 0.7; Pb = 0.66 ± 0.07; Zn = 0.43 ± 0.14; and Cd = 0.03 ± 0.01 mg kg¹ dry weight. These values did not exceeded limits established in the Mexican National Standard (NOM-242-SSA1-2009), of Cd and Pb (0.5 mg kg¹) wet weight. This means that consumption of lionfish from this site does not pose a potential risk for human health.

Cryptic Diversity in Scorpaenodes xyris (Jordan & Gilbert 1882) (Scorpaeniformes: Scorpaenidae) Throughout the Tropical Eastern Pacific.

J Mol Evol

December 2024

Laboratorio de Biología Acuática, Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Francisco Javier Mujica S/N, 58030, Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico.

The tropical eastern Pacific (TEP) is a biogeographic region with a substantial set of isolated oceanic islands and mainland shoreline habitat barriers, as well as complex oceanographic dynamics due to major ocean currents, upwelling areas, eddies, and thermal instabilities. These characteristics have shaped spatial patterns of biodiversity between and within species of reef and shore fishes of the region, which has a very high rate of endemism. Scorpaenodes xyris, a small ecologically cryptic reef-dwelling scorpionfish, is widely distributed throughout the TEP, including all the mainland reef areas and all the oceanic islands.

Pelagic amphipods (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Hyperiidea) from the southern Gulf of Mexico with notes on the distribution of species.

Biodivers Data J

Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City, Mexico Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Mexico City Mexico.

Background: Studies referring the amphipod diversity have been mainly focused on the benthic environment. This study aimed to analye the epipelagic amphipod fauna composition in a sector of the southern Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Previous records in the Gulf mainly comprised the oceanic province; our dataset included both oceanic and neritic zones, off several fluvial and lagoon systems.

Geographic range size and species morphology determines the organization of sponge host-guest interaction networks across tropical coral reefs.

December 2023

Unidad Multidisciplinaria de Docencia e Investigación, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Sisal, Yucatán, Mexico.

Sponges are widely spread organisms in the tropical reefs of the American Northwest-Atlantic Ocean, they structure ecosystems and provide services such as shelter, protection from predators, and food sources to a wide diversity of both vertebrates and invertebrates species. The high diversity of sponge-associated fauna can generate complex networks of species interactions over small and large spatial-temporal gradients. One way to start uncovering the organization of the sponge host-guest complex networks is to understand how the accumulated geographic area, the sponge morphology and, sponge taxonomy contributes to the connectivity of sponge species within such networks.

The dataset is divided in two main groups. The first group, referred to as "Meteorological data", consists of air temperature, sea level pressure and U and V components of wind direction and intensity: The second group, referred to as "Oceanographic data", includes biovolume, sea level and water temperature measurements. The meteorological data is derived from model data obtained from the NAAR-NCEP reanalysis for North America, calculated over the area of the Veracruz reef system, Mexico.

Coliforms are relatively common in aquatic environments, but their concentrations can be increased by environmental changes and anthropogenic activities, thus impacting fisheries resources. To determine the microbiological quality in the octopus production chain (capture, post-capture, processing and commercialization), total (TC) and fecal (FC) coliforms were quantified in sea water, fresh octopus, fresh water, ice and octopus in two presentations: packed in ice and boiled. Samples came from fishing zones Enmedio, Chopa and La Gallega at the Veracruz Reef System (VRS) during dry, rainy and windy seasons.
