Pleomorphic adenoma of the trachea is a rare benign tumor, often challenging to diagnose due to nonspecific symptoms. We report a case of a 72-year-old female with a 10-year history of presumed bronchial asthma, presenting with persistent dyspnea. Preoperative assessment for breast cancer surgery revealed severe obstructive ventilatory impairment.

Role of GLCCI1 in inhibiting PI3K-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation in asthma.

Chin Med J Pulm Crit Care Med

December 2024

Department of Respiratory Medicine, National Key Clinical Specialty, Branch of National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Disease, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan 410008, China.

Background: Glucocorticoid-induced transcript 1 (GLCCI1) has been reported to be associated with the efficiency of inhaled glucocorticoids in patients with asthma. This study aimed to investigate the role of GLCCI1 in the regulation of nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptor (NLR) family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) by the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway in the pathogenesis of allergic asthma.

Methods: The expression levels of genes encoding GLCCI1, NLRP3 inflammasome components, and PI3K pathway-related indicators were detected in cells isolated from induced sputum from patients with asthma and healthy controls.

Background: Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTCL-NT) is a rare, highly invasive Epstein-Barr virus associated hematological malignant tumor with an unfavorable prognosis. Although ENKTCL-NT has been previously reported, no relevant article has provided an intuitive, progressive series of schematic illustrations of the rapid progression of facial ulcers.

Objective: This article reports a serious case of ENKTCL-NT that involved the entire process from onset to death.

In a multi-arm trial with predefined subgroups for each intervention to target, it is often desirable to enrich assignment to an intervention by enrolling more biomarker-positive participants to the intervention. We describe how to implement a biased coin design to achieve desired allocation ratios among interventions and between the number of biomarker-positive and biomarker-negative participants assigned to each intervention. We illustrate the proposed method with the randomization algorithm implemented in the Precision Interventions for Severe and/or Exacerbation-prone Asthma (PrecISE) trial.

Chronic or persistent non-cancer pain disproportionately affects Māori - the Indigenous population of Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) and their whānau (family and significant others). In a previous study with a Māori community service provider - Tū Kotahi Māori Asthma and Research Trust - Tū Kotahi, identified a need for a Kaupapa Māori (by Māori, for Māori) pain management programme (PMP) with embedded principles of Whānau Ora (care focusing on the wellbeing of the individual and their significant others as a collective). Using a qualitative case-study design, the main aims were to describe (1) the implementation of a community-based, whānau-focused PMP; (2) the participant experiences of the programme.
