We report studies on the Frank elastic constant behaviour of a liquid crystal gel system exhibiting the twist bend nematic (Ntb) phase. Physical gelation is observed to ease the splay and stabilize the twist deformations in the nematic phase preceding the Ntb. More importantly, the ultra-low bend elastic constant (K33) of the system is enhanced by an order of magnitude on gelation. The magnitude of K33 remains high even in the vicinity of the Ntb phase, which otherwise is susceptible to bend deformations. This phenomenon is explained from the point of view of polar interactions in the Ntb system. XRD and dynamic rheology along with the elastic constant data validate this argument. Another salient feature of the system is that gel fibers grown in the direction orthogonal to the helical axis vanish in the Ntb phase as observed from polarizing optical microscopy. A possible reason for this is discussed on the basis of ordering developed in the surrounding medium. This feature gives the possibility of using the Ntb phase as a tool to imprint directional microstructures with a gel network.

Circular dichroism mapping (CDM) method was introduced by utilizing the highly collimated light beam of synchrotron radiation (SR) available at Diamond Light Source B23 beamline for scanning the thin films of the N phase. We apply SR-CDM to two achiral dimeric materials exhibiting the N phase: symmetric DTC5C9 and dissymmetric DTC5C9CB. The SR-CDM measurements directly capture the chiral information in the local N domains, providing the ultimate complement to the theoretical predictions of the helical structures: the spontaneous symmetry breaking in N phase is ambidextrous.

Purpose: Oral mucositis (OM) is a debilitating side effect of cisplatin and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) in patients with head and neck cancer. The phase 3 ROMAN trial showed avasopasem manganese (AVA) significantly decreased individual endpoints of incidence and duration of severe oral mucositis (SOM, World Health Organization [WHO] grade 3-4), with nominal decrease in severity (WHO grade 4) and significant increase in the delay in onset of SOM. In recent years, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based on metal oxide semiconductors has been an active area of research and development, attracting significant scientific interest. These SERS substrates are known as plasmon-free SERS substrates because they are not based on noble metal nanoparticles but mainly on the defects, structure, and surface morphology of semiconductors to enhance the Raman signal. This work aims to determine how the nematic twist-bend phase (N) of bismesogens containing two rigid parts of cyanobiphenyls connected with a linking chain containing n = 7, 9, and 11 methylene groups behaves in mixtures with structurally similar cyanobiphenyls nCB, n = 4-12, 14. The whole phase diagrams are presented for the CB7CB-nCB system. For the other systems, CB9CB-nCB and CB11CB-nCB, only curves corresponding to N-N phase transition are presented.
