Theories on the electrophoresis of spherical soft particles suspended in an electrolyte solution are thoroughly reviewed. The review predominantly covers studies on the electrophoresis in dilute and concentrated suspensions as well as bounded media, carried out mainly during the past two decades. Moreover, studies on the electrostatics of soft particles are also surveyed. Finally, the research gaps and prospects of the electrophoresis of soft particles are presented.

This study focuses on fabricating photonic crystals (PCs) by surfactant-based particle capture at the gas-liquid interface of evaporating sessile droplets. The captured particles form interfacial films, resulting in ordered monolayer depositions manifesting iridescent structural colors. The particle dynamics behind the ordered arrangement is delineated.

We measure the response of open-cell polyurethane foams filled with a dense suspension of fumed silica particles in polyethylene glycol at compression speeds spanning several orders of magnitude. The gradual compressive stress increase of the composite material indicates the existence of shear rate gradients in the interstitial suspension caused by wide distributions in pore sizes in the disordered foam network. The energy dissipated during compression scales with an effective internal shear rate, allowing for the collapse of three data sets for different pore-size foams.

The achievement of selectivity in the formation of cubic diamond is challenging due to the emergence of competing phases such as its hexagonal polymorph or clathrates possessing similar free energy. Although both polymorphs exhibit a complete photonic bandgap, cubic diamond exhibits it at lower frequencies than the hexagonal counterpart, positioning it as a promising candidate for photonic applications. Herein, we demonstrate that the 1 : 1 mixture of identical patchy particles cannot selectively form the cubic diamond polymorph due to the frustrations present in the system that are manifested in the primary adsorption layer and propagate as the film grows.

Targeting the development of a 3D printed reservoir-like vaginal rings (VRs) intended to fulfill the needs of precision medicine, prototypes ensuring prolonged release of metronidazole (MTZ) were preliminary manufactured and tested. Indeed, this drug represents the first-line therapy against bacterial vaginosis, which would especially benefit from convenient as well as easy dose adjustment and from more than 48 h continuous release, thus avoiding barely tolerated and repeated administrations. Starting from a soft thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), hollow ring structures were successfully printed at 190 °C and then extemporaneously filled with drug-loaded, in-situ-crosslinking hydrogel formulations based on alginate (ALG).

Coal fly ash, a waste byproduct of coal-fired power plants rich in silica, is produced in vast quantities, exceeding 750 million tons annually. This abundance underscores the importance of finding sustainable and value-added applications for its reuse. Silver nanoparticle-silica composites represent a class of inorganically hybrid antimicrobial agents as the protection layer of cotton fabrics.
