Patients with von Hippel Lindau (VHL) disease develop multiple central nervous system hemangioblastomas (HB). The surgical resection of VHL-HBs is the standard of clinical care when these HBs become symptomatic due to tumor growth, edema, or cyst formation. VHL-HBs frequently present at the obex of the brainstem, making this a challenging surgical problem. Here, we present a case of a large symptomatic brainstem VHL-HB that was resected using a dorsal midline approach and midline myelotomy. This 35-year-old man with VHL disease and multiple prior resections of cerebellar hemangioblastomas presented with progressive bilateral upper extremity weakness, ataxia, and dysphagia. The accompanying two-dimensional (2D) video demonstrates the key techniques for resection of this brainstem hemangioblastoma, including recognizing the pial presentation, sharp pial/subpial dissection, and en bloc removal. Subsequently, we discuss circumferential dissection, identification, and division of feeding vessels. We also demonstrate key maneuvers to recognize and divide the main arterial pedicle while preserving the anterior spinal artery. The patient tolerated the resection without complication and the patient was discharged home after 6 days at his baseline neurologic function. This work was supported by the Intramural Research Program of the National Institutes of Health. The link to the video can be found at: https://youtu.be/mb2VqcLpxDQ .

Background: Shared micromobility programs (SMPs) are integral to urban transport in US cities, providing sustainable transit options. Increased use has raised safety concerns, notably about helmet usage among e-scooter and e-bicycle riders. Prior studies have shown that head and upper extremity injuries have risen with SMP adoption, yet data on helmet use remains sparse.

Stereotype threat refers to the concern of being judged based on stereotypes about one's social group. This preregistered meta-analysis examines the correlates of stereotype threat in the workplace ( = 61 independent samples, 40,134). Results showed that stereotype threat was positively related to exhaustion, identity separation, negative affect, turnover intentions, and behavioral coping, and negatively related to career aspirations, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, job engagement, job performance, positive affect, self-efficacy, and work authenticity.

Despite increasing awareness, sexual harassment remains a significant concern in the workplace. The enduring problem of sexual harassment seems to persist due to a lack of clarity regarding what behaviors qualify as harassment. Furthermore, the interpretation of these behaviors is influenced by contextual and relational factors, contributing to the complexity of addressing and preventing such incidents.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on "DNA breathing," which refers to the local fluctuations of DNA's sugar-phosphate backbones and bases crucial for protein-DNA complex formation.
  • - A new single-molecule fluorescence method is introduced to measure the conformational changes in DNA using a special dimer-labeled probe, allowing researchers to analyze local DNA dynamics accurately.
  • - The technique employs a rotating laser to excite different exciton states of the probe, enabling the collection of detailed fluorescence data that helps explore the interaction of proteins with DNA, particularly at junctions.

Base stacking is fundamentally important to the stability of double-stranded DNA. However, few experiments can directly probe the local conformations and conformational fluctuations of the DNA bases. Here we report a new spectroscopic approach to study the local conformations of DNA bases using the UV-absorbing fluorescent guanine analogue, 6-methyl isoxanthopterin (6-MI), which can be used as a site-specific probe to label DNA.
