Of the various rules establishing a mental health clinician's legal duty to take precautions to protect their patient from harming others, the most common is the specificity rule that limits the protective duty to warn reasonably identifiable victims. The specificity rule is important wherein the main or only specified protective measure is warning the victim. In the last quarter century, Pennsylvania adopted the specificity rule from its Supreme Court Emerich decision.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is increasingly affecting younger individuals, creating a need for timely treatment, but there are significant pre-hospital delays, particularly in China, with little research focused on this age group.* -
  • A study analyzing data from young AIS patients (ages 18-50) found that 82% experienced delays in reaching the hospital, with those aged 36-50 facing longer delays, and identified key factors like stroke awareness and ambulance response time as contributors to these delays.* -
  • The findings suggest that machine learning can help identify risk factors for delays, emphasizing the importance of improving public education on recognizing stroke symptoms and utilizing emergency services to enhance patient outcomes.*

A narrow ratio of nucleic acid to SARS-CoV-2 N-protein enables phase separation.

J Biol Chem

November 2024

Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • SARS-CoV-2's nucleocapsid protein (N) packages viral RNA and forms structures in infected cells through a process called liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS), which is essential for viral functions like replication and immune evasion.
  • * Researchers studied how N and short strands of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) interact to form and break down these condensates, using a sensitive FRET technique to monitor the assembly.
  • * Their findings show that a balanced ratio of N and ssDNA maximizes condensate formation, but too much of either component disrupts it, hinting at potential biological implications and strategies for targeting these processes in antiviral treatments.

Real-time placental vessel segmentation in fetoscopic laser surgery for Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome.

Med Image Anal

January 2025

Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, United States of America; Center for Advanced Medical Computing and Simulation, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, United States of America. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) affects 15% of identical twins sharing a placenta, and the standard treatment is fetoscopic laser photocoagulation (FLP), which improves fetal survival by correcting abnormal blood vessel connections.
  • The proposed solution, TTTSNet, is a network architecture that enhances visualization of placental vessels during FLP surgery, utilizing advanced techniques for accurate vessel segmentation and addressing specific challenges encountered during the procedure.
  • Trained on a dataset of video frames from fetoscopic procedures, TTTSNet showed significant performance growth over existing methods, achieving high accuracy and speed, which could enable real-time surgical applications.

The β-Ketoacyl-ACP Synthase FabF Catalyzes Carbon-Carbon Bond Formation in a Bimodal Pattern for Fatty Acid Biosynthesis.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

November 2024

Department of Chemical Biology, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 200240, Shanghai, China.

Fatty acids produced by the type-II fatty acid biosynthetic pathway (FAS-II) are essential biomaterials for bacterial membrane construction and numerous metabolic routes. The β-ketoacyl-ACP synthase FabF catalyzes the key C-C bond formation step for fatty acid elongation in FAS-II. Here, we revealed the substrate recognition and catalytic mechanisms of FabF by determining FabF-ACP complexes.
