Department of Dermatology, Beilinson Medical Center, Petah, Tiqva, Israel.

Published: July 1988

A case of mycetoma, with abscess-like lesions which appeared on the right forearm of a 43-year-old male, is briefly reported. A few whitish granules were detected in the oily-like discharge, the same as in the histologic examination. No bone involvement was discovered in X-ray examination. Actinomadura was identified in the culture. A daily dose of 4 g bactrin brought significant improvement to the patients continuing the treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • - Mycetoma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting subcutaneous tissues and sometimes bones, often caused by bacteria from the genus Nocardia.
  • - A 43-year-old male presented with extensive mycetoma lesions on his forearm, chest, and neck, showing signs such as erythema and draining pus, diagnosed through genetic sequencing which identified Nocardia mexicana.
  • - Successful treatment with a combination of antibiotics was achieved after six months, and the case suggests that Nocardia mexicana can spread through contact with animals, as it was linked to the patient’s manipulation of a calf.

Misleading subcutaneous mycosis: a case report of subsequent clinical mycetoma-like and histological chromoblastomycosis-like lesions.

Rev Inst Med Trop Sao Paulo

Article Synopsis
  • * A rare case is reported involving an immunocompromised patient with two types of fungal infections: mycetoma-like hyalohyphomycosis on the foot from Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis on the forearm from Exophiala oligosperma.
  • * The case highlights that certain fungal infections can mimic more common conditions, and muriform cells identified in skin examinations do not exclusively indicate chromoblastomycosis, as seen in this patient's forearm lesion.

A manifestation of cutaneous aspergillosis in immunocompetent host: A rare presentation as forearm mass lesion.

The Aspergillus species is a ubiquitous fungus, which can cause pathogenic and opportunistic fungal infections in the immunocompromised. This is an atypical occurrence in the host with an otherwise normal immune status. We report a case of an immunocompetent 45-year-old patient who developed cutaneous aspergillosis with a very benign course presenting simply with a gradually enlarging mass and none of the classical signs and symptoms.
