Stomata not only control the important balance between gaseous fluxes and water loss, but also act as a route of invading pathogen entry into the plant. Here, the stomatal opening was observed to be induced by a necrotrophic pathogen at the early stages of infection. In contrast to uninfected control, the stomatal pores were still opened in -infected regions after dark adaption. Mutation of violaxanthin de-epoxidase, a key enzyme in the xanthophyll cycle, could partially restore the -induced stomatal opening. Further studies showed that invasion led to a decrease in electron transport rate, but a significant increase in non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). The decay kinetics of NPQ revealed that zeaxanthin epoxidase (ZEP, also known as ABA1) was continuous deactivation in -infected region. HPLC-MS/MS analysis showed a slight increase of jasmonate acid (JA), but a great decrease of abscisic acid (ABA) content in -inoculated tissue. Exogenous application of ABA but not JA could rescue the abnormal stomatal opening. Together, these results suggested that the -induced decrease of ABA biosynthesis reduced stomatal closing via dysfunction of the xanthophyll cycle during early pathogenesis.

Diatoms dominate phytoplankton communities in turbulent waters, where light fluctuations can be frequent and intense. Due to this complex environment, these heterokont microalgae display remarkable photoprotection strategies, including a fast Non-Photochemical Quenching (NPQ). However, in nature, several abiotic parameters (such as temperature) can influence the response of photosynthetic organisms to light stress in a synergistic or antagonistic manner.

Sasa senanensis (a dwarf bamboo), an evergreen herbaceous plant native to the cool temperate regions of eastern Asia, endures seasonal temperature fluctuations and significant variations in light intensity typical for understory plants. Following snowmelt in early spring, the light intensity received by Sasa leaves surges, then diminishes as the canopy of upper deciduous trees develops. The current-year leaves of S.

Background: The inactivation of tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) caused by abnormal DNA methylation is confirmed to be widely present in oral potential malignant diseases (OPMDs). Carotenoids like lycopene and astaxanthin can regulate DNA methylation and exert anticancer effects. Therapeutic effect of astaxanthin in OPMDs and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) models is confirmed, but the relationship between the anti-cancer ability of astaxanthin and its DNA methylation regulation ability remains unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is linked to issues like obesity, high blood pressure, and inflammation, especially in older adults, and has mixed connections to dietary antioxidants like carotenoids in relation to heart disease.
  • A study analyzing data from over 6,600 participants aged 40 and up found an inverse relationship between serum lycopene levels (a type of carotenoid) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) deaths over a median follow-up of 16.8 years.
  • The results showed that higher lycopene levels corresponded with a reduced risk of CVD mortality, while no significant associations were found for other carotenoids studied.

Dark Anaerobic Conditions Induce a Fast Induction of the Xanthophyll Cycle in When Exposed to High Light.

Background: Dark anaerobiosis promotes the acidification of the thylakoid lumen and a reduction in the plastoquinone (PQ) pool. The relationship between the reduction in the PQ pool in the dark and the induction of the xanthophyll cycle under high light stress was investigated in .

Methods: To achieve a comprehensive oxidative/reductive (aerobic/anaerobic conditions) state of the PQ pool, cultures were bubbled with air or nitrogen for 4 h.
