"We didn't forget" Utilizing a Community-Nurse Partnership to Promote Health in Rockport, Texas after Hurricane Harvey. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Background: On August 25th 2017 Harvey, a category 4 hurricane, made landfall on the south coast of Texas with heavy winds and rain that severely damaged the seaside town of Rockport. The challenge facing healthcare providers following a natural disaster is timely assessments of community need and available resources. One week later, faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, School of Nursing (SON) completed a community assessment and developed valuable partnerships.

Aims: Eighteen days after the initial assessment, faculty had secured support from The Children's Health Fund and operationalized strategies to provide disaster relief and experiential learning opportunities for the SON Population Focused Health undergraduate students.

Materials & Methods: The community-as-partner model served as the framework to apply the nursing process to a community in crisis. As the focus shifted to recovery, the team prioritized the need to address long-term consequences for children after a natural disaster.

Results: Two educational sessions were designed using an interactive and instructional approach to discuss parental strategies to assess and support children as they navigated through loss after Harvey.

Discussion: This community-nurse partnership has endured, and the SON faculty and students continue to travel to Rockport to promote health and provide education to the community.

There was an unprecedented surge in admissions for medical stabilization of pediatric patients with eating disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario. Eleven hospitals established an integrated rapid response model to ensure timely in-patient access for these patients. This population was cared for in re-allocated community hospital beds as a result of engaging hospital leadership, strengthening partnerships, consulting experts, leveraging existing resources and developing regional bed access strategies.

Background: In Northern Ireland, approximately 550 people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) attend the regional paediatric and adult centres within the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. This autosomal recessive chronic condition necessitates regular clinical monitoring and a high treatment burden, as well as time implications for the maintenance of respiratory devices. Development of health literacy skills at an early age and promoting children with CF (CwCF) to take an active role in their healthcare has many advantages relating to their long-term self-care in preparation for transition from paediatric to adult care, decision-making and partnership engagement with the CF-multidisciplinary team (CF-MDT).

Background: With physical activity levels in children and youth decreasing as their obesity rates rise, collaborations between public health and school health professionals for physical activity interventions are recommended. Physical activity interventions at the school site and those with community involvement in program planning have demonstrated positive outcomes.

Methods: As schools are a vital part of community physical activity promotion for students, public health and school health partners in one state created a brain energizers/movement integration website to support 2 components of a comprehensive school physical activity program: "Physical activity integrated into the school day" and "Staff involvement.

Author Affiliations: Magnet Program Director (Dr Bethel), UPMC Community Osteopathic Hospital, Colonial Park; and Magnet Program Director (McIntosh), UPMC West Shore Hospital, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; and Associate Professor and Director of Research Clinical Partnerships (Dr Rainbow), The University of Arizona School of Nursing, Tucson.

Objective: The aim was to describe the factors leading to, and explore the coping strategies and the consequences of, nurse manager presenteeism.

Background: Presenteeism, or presence at work while not fully performing, is prevalent among direct-care nurses, yet no studies have explored nurse manager presenteeism.

Methods: This study used a convergent mixed-methods design with 1:1 interviews, a demographic questionnaire, mental/physical health and work situation questions, and the Job Stress-Related Presenteeism Scale (JSPS).

Background: Discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, and other sexual and gender diverse (LGBTQ+) individuals in healthcare settings remains a priority issue. Nurse leaders, who oversee the largest healthcare workforce, are critical in implementing inclusive practices to address LGBTQ+ discrimination, yet implementing LGBTQ+ inclusive practices and effective strategies is inconsistent. This qualitative descriptive study explored nurse leaders' perceptions of LGBTQ+ inclusive practices across the United States to inform recommended strategies within health systems.
