In this retrospective study, we analysed the long-term oncological and functional results after extended ray resection for sarcoma of the hand. Recurrence-free and overall survivals were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The function of the operated hand was assessed with the Michigan Hand Questionnaire and compared with the contralateral side. Extended ray resection was performed in 25 out of 168 consecutive patients with soft-tissue and bony sarcomas of the hand. The overall 5- and 10-year, disease-specific survival rates were 86% and 81%, respectively. Local recurrences were observed in two patients. The Michigan Hand Questionnaire score for the affected hand at follow-up in nine patients was 82 points versus 95 for the healthy contralateral hands. We conclude that extended ray resection of osseous sarcomas breaking through the bone into the soft tissue or for soft tissue sarcomas invading bone is a preferable alternative to hand ablation when excision can be achieved with tumour-free margins. Rationale & Objective: Engaging patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) in goals of care (GOC) conversations is essential to align life-sustaining treatments with patient preferences. This pilot study described the feasibility of engaging older Veterans with advanced CKD in GOC conversations via telehealth by (1) comparing patient characteristics, including life-sustaining treatment note completion rates and preferences by visit modality, and (2) exploring Veteran and clinician perspectives surrounding telehealth GOC conversations.
Study Design: Mixed-method convergent design including a prospective, quantitative observational cohort analysis (n = 40) and qualitative, semi-structured interviews with 4 clinicians and 11 Veterans.

Attempts to use colloid science concepts to better understand the dynamic properties of concentrated or crowded protein solutions are challenging due to the fact that globular proteins generally have heterogeneous surfaces that result in anisotropic or patchy contributions to their interaction potential. This is particularly difficult when targeting non-equilibrium transitions such as glass and gel formation in concentrated protein solutions. Here we report a systematic study of the reduced zero shear viscosity of the globular protein -crystallin, an eye lens protein that plays a vital role in vision-related phenomena such as cataract formation or presbyopia, and compare the results to the existing structural and dynamic data.

Transition-metal layered double hydroxides are widely utilized as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), undergoing dynamic transformation into active oxyhydroxides during electrochemical operation. Nonetheless, our understanding of the non-equilibrium structural changes that occur during this process remains limited. In this study, utilizing in situ energy-dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy and machine learning analysis, we reveal the occurrence of deprotonation and elucidate the role of incorporated iron in facilitating the transition from nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) into its active oxyhydroxide.

Chiral binaphthols (BINOL)-metal combinations serve as powerful catalysts in asymmetric synthesis. Their chiral induction mode, however, typically relies on multifarious non-covalent interactions between the substrate and the BINOL ligand. In this work, we demonstrate that the chiral-at-metal stereoinduction mode could serve as an alternative mechanism for BINOL-metal catalysis, based on mechanistic studies of BINOL-aluminum-catalyzed asymmetric hydroboration of heteroaryl ketones.
