Phytochemical investigation and chromatographic separation of extracts from the aerial parts of (L.) DC. (synonym Lam. Ex. Schiler f.) led to the isolation of 10 compounds, the structures of which were determined by HR-ESI-MS and 1 D- and 2 D-NMR spectroscopies, and by comparisons with published studies. Among the isolated compounds were three flavans, a biflavan, a biflavone, a tetralone, a naphthalen glycoside, an aromatic compound, and two steroids. Six of these were known chemicals, while three were identified as new compounds: 7-acetyl-4,8-dihydroxy-6-methyl-1-tetralone, 2(),2',4'-dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavan, and diaensi-biflavan. 2(),7,4'-dimethoxy flavan was obtained for the first time as a natural product.

The granulate ambrosia beetle, Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky), and the black stem borer, Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) are important pests in ornamental nurseries in the eastern USA. These beetles are managed mainly using preventative trunk applications of pyrethroids, such as permethrin or bifenthrin when females typically fly out of woodlots and attack young trees in the spring. Verbenone and methyl salicylate are potential phytochemicals reported as repellants but not completely validated in ornamental nurseries for ambrosia beetle management as an alternative option.

Background: The objective of the present study is to examine the total phenolic and flavonoid content of an ethanol extract of and to evaluate its phytochemical properties, antioxidant activity, and capacity to protect DNA from damage. This pharmaceutical/food resource mushroom may serve as a novel substitute functional food for health-conscious consumers, given its promising source of phenolics and flavonoids.

Methods: ethanol extract (SEE) was evaluated for total phenolic and flavonoid contents, while UPLC-MS analysis was used for terpenoids, phenylpropanoid, flavonoids, steroidal, phenols identification, and function prediction.
