Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are common pollutants of water ecosystems originating from incineration processes and contamination with mineral oil. Water solubility of PAHs is generally low; for toxicity tests with aquatic organisms, they are therefore usually dissolved in organic solvents. Here we examined the effects of a typical model PAH, phenanthrene, and a solvent, acetone, on amphipods as relevant aquatic invertebrate models. Two of these species, Eulimnogammarus verrucosus and Eulimnogammarus cyaneus, are common endemics of the oligotrophic and pristine Lake Baikal, while one, Gammarus lacustris, is widespread throughout the Holarctic and inhabits smaller and more eutrophic water bodies in the Baikal area. Neither solvent nor phenanthrene caused mortality at the applied concentrations, but both substances affected gene expression in all species. Differential gene expression was more profound in the species from Lake Baikal than in the Holarctic species. Moreover, in one of the Baikal species, E. cyaneus, we found that many known components of the cellular xenobiotic detoxification system reacted to the treatments. Finally, we detected a negative relationship between changes in transcript abundances in response to the solvent and phenanthrene. This mixture effect, weaker than the impact by a single mixture component, needs further exploration.

Naltrexone (NTX), a homolog of the opiate antidote naloxone, is an orally active long-acting general opioid receptor antagonist used in the treatment of opiate dependence. NTX is also found to relieve craving for alcohol and is one of few FDA-approved medications for treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD). While it was early on established that NTX acts by blocking the binding of endogenous opioid peptide ligands released by alcohol, experimental evidence emerged that could not be fully accounted for by this explanation alone, suggesting that NTX may have additional modes of action.

From a bio-based polyphenol diol intermedia to high-performance polyurethane elastomer: Thermal stability, reprocessability and flame retardancy.

In this work, a novel bio-based polyphenol diol intermediate (VDP) was synthesized through a combination of aldimine condensation and addition reactions, utilizing vanillin, 4,4'diamino diphenylmethane (DDM), and 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phospha-phenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) as reactants, then various contents of VDP was introduced covalently into the polyurethane backbone. The integration of VDP has notably improved the flame retardancy of polyurethane elastomer, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of the elastomer was elevated from 23% to 30%, and reaches V-0 rating in the UL-94 vertical burning test. The enhancement of flame retardancy is attributed to the introduction of VDP units, which not only generate PO· and PO∙ that can capture active free radicals during combustion, but also releases non-flammable gases to improve the flame-retardant effect.
