Schematic knowledge about people helps us to understand their behaviour in novel situations. The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and hippocampus play important, yet poorly understood, roles in schema-based processing. Here, we manipulated schematic knowledge by familiarizing participants over the course of a week to the two lead characters of one of two TV shows. Then during MRI scanning, they viewed pictures of all four characters and performed a recognition memory test afterwards. Memory was also tested for short videos. Schematic knowledge boosted performance on both memory tests. Whole-brain analyses revealed knowledge related activation increases in the vmPFC and retrosplenial cortex while a similar effect was identified in a hippocampal region-of-interest. Representational similarity analyses identified person-specific patterns of activity in the vmPFC but not hippocampus, but no effect of familiarization. Our findings suggest complementary roles for the vmPFC and hippocampus in processing schematic knowledge that was acquired in a naturalistic manner.

We offer a new model of the sensemaking process for data analysis and visualization. Whereas past sensemaking models have been grounded in positivist assumptions about the nature of knowledge, we reframe data sensemaking in critical, humanistic terms by approaching it through an interpretivist lens. Our three-phase process model uses the analogy of an iceberg, where data is the visible tip of underlying schemas.

Understanding and remembering the complex experiences of everyday life relies critically on prior schematic knowledge about how events in our world unfold over time. How does the brain construct event representations from a library of schematic scripts, and how does activating a specific script impact the way that events are segmented in time? We developed a novel set of 16 audio narratives, each of which combines one of four location-relevant event scripts (restaurant, airport, grocery store, and lecture hall) with one of four socially relevant event scripts (breakup, proposal, business deal, and meet cute), and presented them to participants in an fMRI study and a separate online study. Responses in the angular gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, and subregions of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) were driven by scripts related to both location and social information, showing that these regions can track schematic sequences from multiple domains.

The microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) process has been identified as a promising alternative to conventional enhanced oil recovery methods because it is eco-friendly and economically advantageous. However, the knowledge about the composition and diversity of microbial communities in artificially regulated reservoirs, especially after activating petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria (PHDB) by injecting exogenous nutrients, is still insufficient. This study utilized a combination of high-throughput sequencing and metagenomics technology to reveal the structural evolution characteristics of the indigenous microbial community in the reservoir during the PHDB activated for enhanced oil recovery, as well as the response relationship between the expression of its oil production functional genes and crude oil biodegradation.
