Background: We investigated light attenuation at 664 nm, which is the excitation wavelength of photodynamic therapy (PDT) using talaporfin sodium, in a salted cadaver brain. Estimation of therapeutic lesions is important to ensure the effectiveness and safety of brain tumor PDT. Previously reported optical properties of the human brain vary widely. In this study, we measured the light attenuation in brain tissue using a practical method. We employed a salted cadaver brain, in which the mechanical and optical properties can be maintained as close as possible to those under operative conditions.
Methods: A neuroendoscope was inserted into the brain until the cerebral ventricle was reached. A thin cylindrical diffuser probe was advanced 10 mm from the endoscope tip. By another path from the brain surface, an optical fiber for measurement was inserted into a puncture needle, and a pair of needles was used to puncture the tissue and reach the same cerebral ventricle in which the endoscope tip was positioned. The attenuation of light intensities in the frontal lobe and cerebellum was measured by varying the bundle tip position. The starting positions of the bundle were confirmed by the endoscopic view. The measured light intensity attenuations were fitted with an exponential curve.
Results: The following attenuation coefficients were obtained: 0.20 ± 0.05 mm in the cerebrum and 0.27 ± 0.05 mm in the cerebellum.
Conclusion: As conventional spectroscopic measurement may overestimate attenuation in the whole tissue, in situ measurement using the withdrawal technique might be appropriate for measurement of inhomogeneous biological tissues.

Despite osteoarthritis (OA) being recognised for over a century as a debilitating disease that affects millions, there are huge gaps in our understanding of the underlying pathophysiology that drives this disease. Present day studies that focussed on ubiquitination (Ub) and ubiquitylation-like (Ubl) modification related mechanisms have brought light into the possibility of attenuating OA development by targeting these specific proteins in chondrocytes. In the present review, we discuss recent advances in studies involving Ub ligases and deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) which are of importance in the development of OA, and may offer potential therapeutic strategies for OA.

Amphetamine (AMPH) abuse represents a major global public health issue, highlighting the urgent need for effective therapeutic interventions to manage addiction caused by this psychostimulant. This study aimed to assess the potential of m-trifluoromethyl-diphenyldiselenide [(m-CF-PhSe)] in preventing the addictive effects induced by AMPH through targeting dopamine metabolism proteins. (m-CF-PhSe) is of interest due to its demonstrated efficacy in mitigating opioid abuse, establishing it as a promising candidate for addiction treatment research.

The microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process shows potential for carbon-neutral wastewater treatment, yet its application in wastewater treatment plants remains underexplored. This study attempted to use a continuous-flow raceway reactor to treat real municipal wastewater using the MBGS process. The results showed that the removal efficiencies of organics peaked on the fifth day, while declining trends were observed for nitrogen and phosphorus removal.

Novel functional materials possessing the capability to attenuate electromagnetic energy are being increasingly incorporated into home decor as concerns over excessive electromagnetic radiation pollution continue to grow. The properties of magnetism and dielectricity in the flexible peanut shell/CoFeO/reduced graphene oxide/polyvinyl alcohol (PS/CF/(RGO)/PVA) nanocomposites can be finely tuned by adjusting the amount of RGO in the mixture. An examination of the composite's absorption capabilities revealed a direct link between higher RGO content and enhanced absorption.

Neglecting the time intervals between sampling and biological testing can lead to misinterpretation of the hazards associated with advanced oxidation processes when assessed through bioassays. This study investigates changes in the non-specific toxicity of ozonated aromatic compounds and analyzes the factors such as temperature and light exposure influencing these changes during sample storage. The findings reveal a significant decrease in biotoxicity of ozonated effluents, ranging from 41 % to 83 %, within the first four days of storage at 22 °C under natural light exposure.
