Connecting two porphyrin units in a rigid linear fashion, without any undesired electron delocalization or communication between the chromophores, remains a synthetic challenge. Herein, a broad library of functionally diverse multi-porphyrin arrays that incorporate the non-traditional rigid linker groups cubane and bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane (BCP) is described. A robust, reliable, and versatile synthetic procedure was employed to access porphyrin-cubane/BCP-porphyrin arrays, representing the largest non-polymeric structures available for cubane/BCP derivatives. These reactions demonstrate considerable substrate scope, from utilization of small phenyl moieties to large porphyrin rings, with varying lengths and different angles. To control conformational flexibility, amide bonds were introduced between the bridgehead carbon of BCP/cubane and the porphyrin rings. Through varying the orientation of the substituents around the amide bond of cubane/BCP, different intermolecular interactions were identified through single crystal X-ray analysis. These studies revealed non-covalent interactions that are the first-of-their-kind including a unique iodine-oxygen interaction between cubane units. These supramolecular architectures indicate the possibility to mimic a protein structure due to the sp rigid scaffolds (BCP or cubane) that exhibit the essential conformational space for protein function while simultaneously providing amide bonds for molecular recognition.

Oxidation of thia-pentapyrrane S-P4 with terminal β-linked pyrrole and thiophene units in the presence of various metal ions has been found to afford distinct porphyrinoids. Specifically, N-confused thiasapphyrin (1), Cu(III) norrole (2), neo-confused phlorin (3), and p-benzinorrole (4) were obtained, when S-P4 was oxidized with p-chloranil in acetonitrile in the presence of Ni2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, and Co2+, respectively. The structures of 1-4 have been clearly elucidated by NMR spectroscopy, HRMS, and X-ray crystal diffraction (for 2-4).

A supramolecular system, consisting of a tetrapyrenylporphyrinic core surrounded by arene-ruthenium prisms, has been assembled and characterized by means of electrochemical and photophysical techniques. The photophysical study shows that quantitative energy transfer from the peripheral pyrenyl units towards the central porphyrin core is operative in the tetrapyrenylporphyrinic system. Interestingly, encapsulation of the pyrenyl units into the ruthenium cages affects the photophysics of the central porphyrin component, since its emission quantum yield is reduced in the supramolecular array.

Global Aromatic Ring Currents in Neutral Porphyrin Nanobelts.

The ability of a ring-shaped molecule to sustain a global aromatic or antiaromatic ring current when placed in a magnetic field indicates that its electronic wave function is coherently delocalized around its whole circumference. Large molecules that display this behavior are attractive components for molecular electronic devices, but this phenomenon is rare in neutral molecules with circuits of more than 40 π-electrons. Here, we use theoretical methods to investigate how the global ring currents evolve with increasing ring size in cyclic molecular nanobelts built from edge-fused porphyrins.

The delocalization length of charge carriers in organic semiconductors influences their mobility and is an important factor in the design of functional materials. Here, we have studied the radical anions of a series of linear and cyclic butadiyne-linked porphyrin oligomers using CW-EPR, H Mims ENDOR and NIR/MIR spectroelectrochemistry together with DFT calculations and multiscale molecular modeling. Low-temperature hyperfine EPR spectroscopy and optical data show that polarons are delocalized nonuniformly over about four porphyrins with most of the spin density on just two units even in the cyclic structures, in which all porphyrin sites are identical.

Electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and solvation effects can alter the free energies of ionizable functional groups in proteins and other nanoporous architectures, allowing such structures to tune acid-base chemistry to support specific functions. Herein, we expand on this theme to examine how metal sites ( = H, Zn, Co, Co) affect the p of benzoic acid guests bound in discrete porphyrin nanoprisms () in CDCN. These host-guest systems were chosen to model how porous metalloporphyrin electrocatalysts might influence H transfer processes that are needed to support important electrochemical reactions (e.
