Expressive design environments enable visualization designers not only to specify chart types and visual mappings, but also to customize individual graphical marks, as they would in a vector graphics drawing tool. Prior work has mainly investigated how to support the expressive design of a wide range of charts generated from tabular data: bar charts, scatterplots, maps, etc. We focus here on an expressive design environment for node-link diagrams generated from multivariate networks. Such data structures raise specific challenges and opportunities in terms of visual design and interactive authoring. We discuss those specificities and describe the user-centered design process that led to Graphies, a prototype environment for expressive node-link diagram authoring. We then report on a study in which participants successfully reproduced several expressive designs, and created their own designs as well.

To improve the expressiveness and realism of illustration images, the experiment innovatively combines the attention mechanism with the cycle consistency adversarial network and proposes an efficient style transfer method for illustration images. The model comprehensively utilizes the image restoration and style transfer capabilities of the attention mechanism and the cycle consistency adversarial network, and introduces an improved attention module, which can adaptively highlight the key visual elements in the illustration, thereby maintaining artistic integrity during the style transfer process. Through a series of quantitative and qualitative experiments, high-quality style transfer is achieved, especially while retaining the original features of the illustration.

Spiking neural networks seek to emulate biological computation through interconnected artificial neuron and synapse devices. Spintronic neurons can leverage magnetization physics to mimic biological neuron functions, such as integration tied to magnetic domain wall (DW) propagation in a patterned nanotrack and firing tied to the resistance change of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ), captured in the domain wall-magnetic tunnel junction (DW-MTJ) device. Leaking, relaxation of a neuron when it is not under stimulation, is also predicted to be implemented based on DW drift as a DW relaxes to a low energy position, but it has not been well explored or demonstrated in device prototypes.

Regular use of standardized observational tools to assess nonverbal pain behaviors results in improved pain care for older adults with severe dementia. While frequent monitoring of pain behaviors in long-term care (LTC) is constrained by resource limitations, computer vision technology has the potential to mitigate these challenges. A computerized algorithm designed to assess pain behavior in older adults with and without dementia was recently developed and validated using video recordings.

Introduction: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a prevalent eye disease among middle-aged and older adults. AMD leaves the patient with irreversible deteriorating vision, which profoundly impacts their daily lives and psychosocial well-being. Given the limited studies addressing the psychosocial needs of adults with AMD and, in particular, using an expressive arts-based intervention (EXABI) as an intervention, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of such an intervention in enhancing the psychosocial well-being of adults with AMD.
