We demonstrate herein an effective cascade reaction for combined photodynamic and starvation therapy in treating breast tumors based on a photosensitizer and CO prodrug decorated NMOF. The PDT-induced ROS can further trigger CO release, and the high antitumor efficiency derived from both 1O2 and CO is well confirmed by in vitro assays and in vivo trials.

Can α-Mangostin and Photodynamic Therapy Support Ciprofloxacin in the Inactivation of Uropathogenic and Strains?

Int J Mol Sci

December 2024

Department of Biology and Medical Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Wrocław Medical University, Mikulicza-Radeckiego 9, 50-345 Wroclaw, Poland.

Multidrug-resistant bacteria represent a significant challenge in the treatment of bacterial infections, often leading to therapeutic failures. This issue underlines the need to develop strategies that improve the efficacy of conventional antibiotic therapies. In this study, we aimed to assess whether a plant-derived compound, α-mangostin, and photodynamic therapy (PDT) could enhance the antibacterial activity of ciprofloxacin against uropathogenic strains of and .

Carbon-based nanozymes (CNs) have emerged as a significant innovation in targeted cancer therapy, demonstrating great potential for advancing cancer diagnosis and treatment. With exceptional catalytic properties, remarkable biocompatibility, and the ability to precisely target cancer cells, CNs provide a promising avenue for the development of novel oncological therapies. By functionalizing their surfaces with targeting ligands, such as antibodies or peptides, CNs can specifically recognize and bind to cancer cells.

In situ activation of prodrugs or photosensitizers is a promising strategy for specifically killing tumor cells while avoiding toxic side effects. Herein, we originally develop a bioorthogonally activatable prodrug and pro-photosensitizer system to synchronously yield an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) photosensitizer and a chemotherapeutic drug for synergistic chemo-photodynamic-immunotherapy of tumors. By employing molecular engineering strategy, we rationally design a family of tetrazine-functionalized tetraphenylene-based photosensitizers, one of which (named TzPS5) exhibits a high turn-on ratio, a NIR emission, a typical AIE character, and an excellent ROS generation efficiency upon bioorthogonal-activation.
