We report on the use of elliptical pump spatial modes to increase the observed brightness of spontaneous parametric downconversion in critically phase-matched crystals. Simulations qualitatively predict this improvement, which depends on the eccentricity and orientation of the pump ellipse. We experimentally confirm a factor of two improvement in brightness when compared to the traditional circular-symmetric pump spatial modes. These results support previous theoretical work that proposes the use of elliptical pump modes to enhance the performance of parametric processes in anisotropic materials.

Bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) can break the Shockley-Queisser limit by leveraging the inherent asymmetry of crystal lattice without a junction. However, this effect is mainly confined to UV-vis spectrum due to the wide-bandgap nature of traditional ferroelectric materials, thereby limiting the exploration of the infrared light-driven efficient BPVE. Herein, giant two-photon absorption (TPA) driven BPVE is uncovered from visible to infrared in ferroelectric α-InSe utilizing wavelength-tunable terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy.

Controlling four-wave mixing (FWM) is vital for several applications, including fiber optical communication, optical signal processing, optical amplification, and frequency generation. This paper presents a novel, to our knowledge, approach to control unidirectional FWM in elliptically birefringent fibers. By leveraging the frequency-dependent polarization eigenmodes of these fibers and detuning the optical frequency of one of the pump fields by a few megahertz, we can turn the FWM interaction on and off, thus controlling the generation of signal and idler fields.

We discuss the nonlinear process of optical parametric amplification inside a chiral crystal. We show that circular birefringence, induced by chirality, leads to two different nonlinear processes with different phase-matching conditions that are associated with the opposite states of circular polarizations. A single nonlinear process occurs only when the states of polarization of the incident pump and signal beams are both circular and orthogonal.

The existing Pascal curve gears are limited by inflexible pitch curves and constrained transmission ratio changes, which hinders the application in a range of mechanical systems that require more adaptable gear solutions. To address this, a design procedure for higher-order multisegment denatured Pascal curve gear is proposed. A unified mathematical expression for the Pascal curve gear family is derived, enabling the construction of non-circular gears with free-form pitch curves by adjusting key parameters and offering more flexible pitch curve and a wider range of transmission ratios.

Soft peristaltic pumps, which use soft ring actuators instead of mechanical pistons or rollers, offer advantages in transporting liquids with non-uniform solids, such as slurry, food, and sewage. Recent advances in 3D printing with flexible thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) present the potential for single-step fabrication of these pumps, distinguished from handcrafted, multistep traditional silicone casting methods. However, because of the relatively high hardness of TPU, TPU-based soft peristaltic pumps contract insufficiently and thus cannot perform as well as silicone-based ones.
