On November 2015, the Fundão Tailings Dam, located at Mariana municipality in Brazil, failed. Besides the deaths and injuries, economic losses, pollution and health problems associated to heavy metals in the water, Brazilian municipalities near the accident experienced an increase in the incidence of dengue. Since dengue fever is an insect-borne disease and the mosquito develops where there is stored water, there must be a relationship between the dam accident and the incidence of the disease. The purpose of this study is to test whether there is a causal relationship between the dam accident in Mariana and the number of dengue cases, number of hospitalizations due to dengue, and dengue outbreak in the municipalities affected by the accident. We find evidence that the accident had a positive and statistically significant impact on dengue indicators (for example, the probability of a dengue outbreak increased in 19%), what makes us call attention to another negative externality of tailings dam accidents.

The initial performance of seedlings of tree species from different functional groups, regarding the growth-defense tradeoff, might determine its long-term success during the rehabilitation of mining areas. We monitored the field performance of six native tree species of the Atlantic Forest in the Fundão dam tailing that has been under rehabilitation for 35 months. Additionally, we explored the morphophysiological traits driving the superior performance of three species.

While the co-disposal method has been extensively explored for various mineral substances, a notable gap exists in the literature concerning its application specifically to tailings and waste rock generated from phosphate mining operations. Eight years after the tailings dam collapse in Mariana, MG, Brazil, several aspects of this massive disaster are yet to be elucidated. Our goal was to investigate the impact of the mud flow on 16 fish species collected across 15 points from the Doce River, addressing 12 metal concentrations, tissue oxidative status (antioxidant enzymes and stress biomarkers), and histopathological analyses. The species Trachelyopterus striatulus, Prochilodus vimboides, Loricariichthys castaneus, Lophiosilurus alexandri, Hypostomus affinis, Hoplias intermedius were shown to be the most affected regarding the gills tissue integrity; Hypostomus affinis, Oligosarcus acutirostris, Lophiosilurus alexandri, Pygocentrus nattereri, Hoplosternum littorale, and Loricariichthys castaneus showed the highest levels of liver health.
