Injuries sustained by donor heart and lung allografts during the transplantation process are multiple and cumulative. Optimization of allograft function plays an essential role in short- and long-term outcomes after transplantation. Therapeutic targets to prevent or attenuate injury are present in the donor, the preservation process, during transplantation, and in postoperative management of the recipient. The newest and most promising methods of optimizing donor heart and lung allografts are found in alternative preservation strategies, which enable functional assessment of donor organs and provide a modality to initiate therapies for injured allografts or prevent injury during reperfusion in recipients.

Unlabelled: Malaria, caused by spp., is a global health concern linked to anemia and increased mortality. Compensatory erythropoiesis seen during acute anemia results in an increased circulating reticulocyte count ( , immature RBC) a key factor in understanding the relationship between pre-existing anemia and burden.

Background: Currently, there are no standardized guidelines for graft allocation in heart transplants (HTxs), particularly when considering organs from marginal donors and donors after cardiocirculatory arrest. This complexity highlights the need for an effective risk analysis tool for primary graft dysfunction (PGD), a severe complication in HTx. Existing score systems for predicting PGD lack superior predictive capability and are often too complex for routine clinical use.

Background: Normothermic ex situ heart perfusion (ESHP) has emerged as a valid modality for advanced cardiac allograft preservation and conditioning prior to transplantation though myocardial function declines gradually during ESHP thus limiting its potential for expanding the donor pool. Recently, the utilization of dialysis has been shown to preserve myocardial and coronary vasomotor function. Herein, we sought to determine the changes in myocardial metabolism that could support this improvement.

Long-term Mechanical Circulatory Support in Cardiogenic Shock Secondary to Acromegaly. Case report.

Rev Esp Anestesiol Reanim (Engl Ed)

January 2025

Departamento de ECMO, Fundación Cardiovascular de Colombia, Floridablanca, Colombia. Electronic address:

Heart failure is a complication that may develop in patients diagnosed with acromegaly. This complication can progress to cardiogenic shock, which in cases like the one described, may be refractory to optimal medical management, necessitating the use of mechanical circulatory support as a bridge to decision. Given the specific morphology of this patient's heart, the likelihood of finding a suitable donor in our environment was very low.

A Comparative Study Between Cold Static Storage and Normothermic Ex-Situ Donor Heart Preservation in a Rat Model of Heterotopic Heart Transplantation.

J Surg Res

January 2025

Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Chonnam National University Hospital and Medical School, Gwangju, Republic of Korea; Extracorporeal Circulation Research Team, Chonnam National University Hospital, Gwangju, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Introduction: Cold static storage (CSS) and normothermic ex-situ preservation are the most widely used donor heart preservation techniques worldwide. The current study compares both CSS and normothermic ex-situ preservation methods in terms of graft performance, morphologic changes, and acute immune response in an experimental model.

Method And Materials: Twenty rats underwent heterotopic abdominal heart transplantation after 2 h of CSS (group 1; n = 10) or normothermic ex-situ perfusion (group 2; n = 10).
