Neonatal withdrawal can be difficult to treat in infants with co-exposure to opiates and gabapentin. Because maternal self-report can underestimate exposures, we evaluated the effect of universal toxicology screening for gabapentin. Identification of co-exposure to opiates and gabapentin increased after implementation of toxicology screening, with implications for improved neonatal care.

Despite combination antiretroviral therapy effectively suppressing HIV within the periphery, neuro-acquired HIV (neuroHIV) remains a significant problem and approximately half of people living with HIV will experience HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Concurrent opioid use exacerbates neuroHIV by promoting neuroinflammation, neuronal injury and synaptodendritic culling, viral replication, and potentially altering antiretroviral concentrations within the brain. The present study examined the effects of HIV and morphine co-exposure on the accumulation and spatial distribution of antiretroviral drugs across multiple regions within the brain in an HIV-1 Tat transgenic mouse model by using infrared-matrix-assisted laser desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging (IR-MALDESI MSI).

Despite the advent of combination anti-retroviral therapy (cART), nearly half of people infected with HIV treated with cART still exhibit HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). HAND can be worsened by co-morbid opioid use disorder. The basal ganglia are particularly vulnerable to HIV-1 and exhibit higher viral loads and more severe pathology, which can be exacerbated by co-exposure to opioids.

Aim: To describe the symptoms, patient demographics, and trends over time of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) related to weak opioid analgesics reported to the French vigilance networks.

Methods: Retrospective study of data from French Poison Control Centers and Pharmacovigilance Centers databases of weak opioid analgesics-related ADRs cases, with high causality score, in adults, in therapeutic analgesic use, without co-exposure, between 2011 and 2020.

Results: The number of cases was 388 in the Poisonings database and 155 in the Pharmacovigilance database; ratio of the number of these cases to all reported cases during the study period was 0.

Effects of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) on fetal brain and cranial measurements.

Neurotoxicol Teratol

May 2023

College of Pharmacy Substance Use Research and Education Center, University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, Albuquerque, NM, United States of America. Electronic address:

Background: The use and misuse of opioids, as well as opioid use disorder (OUD) have increased remarkably among reproductive-aged and pregnant women. As many as 25% of pregnant women who report non-medical opioid use in the past month also report concurrent alcohol use. While teratogenic effects of alcohol are well established, there are limited studies evaluating fetal intracranial effects associated with medications for OUD (MOUD) and concurrent use of MOUD and alcohol during pregnancy.
