Effect of ring rize on photoisomerization properties of stiff stilbene macrocycles.

Published: October 2019

A series of stiff stilbene macrocycles have been studied to investigate the possible impact of the macrocycle ring size on their photodynamic properties. The results show that reducing the ring size counteracts the photoisomerization ability of the macrocycles. However, even the smallest macrocycle studied (stiff stilbene subunits linked by a six carbon chain) showed some degree of isomerization when irradiated. DFT calculations of the energy differences between the - and -isomers show the same trend as the experimental results. Interestingly the DFT study highlights that the energy difference between the - and -isomers of even the largest macrocycle (linked by a twelve carbon chain) is significantly higher than that of the stiff stilbene unit itself. In general, it is indicated that addition of even a flexible chain to the stiff stilbene unit may significantly affect its photochemical properties and increase the photostability of the resulting macrocycle.

Here, we report the design, synthesis, and comprehensive characterization of the bis-cholesterol supramolecular gelator, which contains photochromic stiff-stilbene as a bridging unit. The -isomer of stiff-stilbene bridged bis-cholesterol (-) was first synthesized with a systematic design, which can be further converted into its -isomer (-) with a high degree of efficiency (ca. 100%) upon exposure to 385 nm UV light.

A photoswitchable [2]catenane receptor.

Chem Commun (Camb)

Leiden Institute of Chemistry, Leiden University, Einsteinweg 55, 2333 CC Leiden, The Netherlands.

A [2]catenane-based receptor functionalized with stiff-stilbene can be reversibly switched with 340/385 nm light between its - and -isomers, which leads to a considerable change in chloride binding affinity. Photoisomerization in the presence of chloride allows for on demand guest uptake and release.

Understanding and effectively controlling molecular conformational changes are essential for developing responsive and dynamic molecular systems. Here, we report that an oriented external electric field (OEEF) is an effective catalyst for the cis-trans isomerization of stiff-stilbene, a key component of overcrowded alkene-based rotary motors. This reversible isomerization occurs under ambient conditions, is free from side reactions, and has been verified using ultraperformance liquid chromatography and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy.

Control of Bilayer Transport through a Photoswitchable Membrane-Stiffening Agent.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

December 2024

Leiden Institute of Chemistry, Leiden University, Einsteinweg 55, 2333 CC, Leiden, The, Netherlands.

The mobility of proteins in the bilayer membrane is affected by (local) changes in lipid environment, which is important to their biological functioning. Artificial molecular systems that-to some extent-imitate tasks of membrane-embedded proteins are increasingly developed, however, they are usually controlled through responsive units in their core structure. Here we present an alternative approach based on an amphiphilic stiff-stilbene derivative that enables control of membrane fluidity by light.
