The epidemiology of infection in rural Mexico is largely unknown. Therefore, we sought to determine the seroprevalence of infection in rural people in a northern Mexican state. We performed a cross-sectional seroprevalence study of 641 people living in rural Durango State including 282 subjects of the general population, 214 subjects of Huichol ethnicity, and 145 subjects of Mennonite ethnicity. Sera of participants were analyzed for the presence of anti immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies using a commercially available enzyme immunoassay. Three (0.5%) of the 641 subjects tested were positive for anti- IgG antibodies. Of the 3 seropositive subjects, two were females, aged 19 and 39 years, and one was male, aged 59 years. They had contacted with dogs, cleaned cat excrement, consumed unwashed raw fruits, contacted soil, or lived in a house with soil floors. Seroprevalence of infection was similar among the 3 groups of population studied: 0.4% for the general population, 0.9% for Huicholes, and 0.0% for Mennonites (P = 0.41). In conclusion, the seroprevalence found in subjects in rural Durango is low as compared with those reported in people from rural areas in other countries.

Adults and immatures of were collected in July and December 2022 at sites of high elevation in the states of Chihuahua (2300 masl) and Zacatecas (2182 and 2595 masl), Mexico, respectively. Mosquitoes were identified morphologically and sequenced for a DNA barcode of the cytochrome c oxidase I (COX1). This is the first distributional record of in Zacatecas and provides evidence of the highest altitude in the Americas, including Mexico.

Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and depression co-occur, and rates are on the rise in adolescents, disproportionately affecting teenagers in rural communities and those who identify as members of historically disadvantaged racial/ethnic groups. Addressing the promotion of health behaviors is important for prevention of these comorbid health concerns; however, disparities in their prevalence highlight that a healthy lifestyle is not equally accessible for all individuals. Thus, holistic and multi-level approaches that address structural inequities, leverage cultural and family assets, and are effectively integrated into the community are critically needed.

Access to antivenoms in cases of snakebite continues to be an important public health issue around the world, especially in rural areas with poorly developed health care systems. This study aims to evaluate therapeutic itineraries and antivenom accessibility following snakebites in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas in southern Mexico. Employing an intercultural health approach that seeks to understand and bridge allopathic and traditional medical perceptions and practices, we conducted field interviews with 47 snakebite victims, documenting the therapeutic itineraries of 54 separate snakebite incidents that occurred between 1977 and 2023.
