Introduction: Hypoalbuminemia (<3.5 mg/dL) is an accepted marker of malnutrition, but it was unknown if low albumin remained an independent predictor of post-operative complications following primary total hip (THA) and knee (TKA) arthroplasty.
Methods: The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database was queried for patients undergoing primary THA and TKA. Propensity score-matched analysis was used to control for co-morbid conditions.
Results: Patients with low albumin demonstrated greater odds of death (by 2-21x), morbidity (by 25-51%), re-admission (by 45-54%), and increased length of stay.
Conclusion: Low albumin remains an independent predictor of adverse outcomes following primary total joint arthroplasty.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been observed that acute kidney injury (AKI) especially requiring intervention support of hemodialysis has notably increased mortality rates among COVID-19-positive critically ill patients; however, comprehensive data regarding this from India, especially the eastern territory, remains sparse. This study aims to outline the demographic, clinical, and biochemical characteristics, along with the outcomes, of these patients.
Methods: A retrospective study was performed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna, from March 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021.

Robotic surgery is extensively used for rectal cancer treatment. Nonetheless, studies on whether to preserve the left colonic artery (LCA) during robotic rectal cancer surgery to reduce complications remain scarce and controversial. This study compared short-term outcomes of high tie (HT) and low tie (LT) ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery in 455 patients undergoing robotic rectal cancer surgery between May 2018 and July 2022.

Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV), also known as human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8), is the primary etiologic cause of Kaposi sarcoma (KS) and KSHV Inflammatory Cytokine Syndrome (KICS). Patients with KICS demonstrate symptoms of systemic inflammation, high KSHV viral load, elevation of inflammatory markers, and increased mortality. Management requires rapid diagnosis, treatment of underlying HIV, direct treatment of KS, and addressing the hyperimmune response.

Patient age, comorbidities and disease-specific genetic abnormalities are recognized as primary determinants of treatment response. Recent years have elucidated the significance of nutritional status and inflammation across various malignancies, including AML, in influencing treatment outcomes.
