Montmorillonite clay has a wide range of applications, one of which includes the binding of mycotoxins in foods and feeds through adsorption. T-2 toxin, produced by some and species, causes dystrophy in the brain, heart, and kidney. Various formulations that include lemongrass essential oil-modified montmorillonite clay (LGEO-MMT), lemongrass powder (LGP), montmorillonite clay washed with 1 mM NaCl (Na-MMT), montmorillonite clay (MMT), and lemongrass powder mixed with montmorillonite clay (LGP-MMT) were applied to maize at concentrations of 8% and 12% and stored for a period of one month at 30 °C. Unmodified montmorillonite clay and LGP served as the negative controls alongside untreated maize. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra of the various treatments showed the major functional groups as Si-O and -OH. All treatment formulations were effective in the decontamination of T-2 toxin in maize. Accordingly, it was revealed that the inclusion of Na-MMT in maize at a concentration of 8% was most effective in decontaminating T-2 toxin by 66% in maize followed by LGP-MMT at 12% inclusion level recording a 56% decontamination of T-2 toxin in maize ( = 0.05). Montmorillonite clay can be effectively modified with plant extracts for the decontamination of T-2 toxin.

In the current research mushroom/bentonite clay (RDBNC) as a low-cost bionanosorbent was investigated for adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG) dye from contaminated water. The bionanosorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Zeta-potential techniques. Adsorption experiments of RDBNC for MB, MG dyes following Freundlich isotherm and pseudo second order kinetic models.

Biocrusts are the primary organic carbon reservoirs in desert areas, in which inorganic clays potentially playing significant roles; however, the specific details of these roles remain largely unclear. In this study, typical 1:1 type (kaolin) and 2:1 type (montmorillonite, MMT) clay minerals were added to artificial biocrusts to investigate their effect on the acquisition performance of soil organic carbon (SOC). After 84 days of cultivation, the enhancement effects of kaolin and MMT were significant, resulting in SOC increments that were 5.

Cadmium (Cd) isotopes have recently emerged as novel tracers of Cd sources and geochemical processes. Widespread clay minerals play a key role in Cd migration due to their strong adsorption capacity, but the mechanism of Cd isotope fractionation during adsorption onto clay minerals is poorly understood. Here, we experimentally investigated the adsorption mechanisms of Cd on montmorillonite (2:1) and kaolinite (1:1) by using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy.

In recent years, a great interest has been focused on the prebiotic origin of nucleic acids and life on Earth. An attractive idea is that life was initially based on an autocatalytic and autoreplicative RNA (the RNA-world). RNA duplexes are right-handed helical chains with antiparallel orientation, but the rationale for these features is not yet known.
