Epidemiology studies have shown that consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with the prevention of chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. Induction of cellular phase II detoxifying enzymes is associated with cancer preventive potential. Phenolsulfotransferases (PSTs) are traditionally known as phase II drug-metabolizing or detoxifying enzymes that facilitate the removal of drugs and other xenobiotic compounds.

Background: Transfected Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells (of distal tubular origin) have been used to study transport of organic anions. These cells have not been shown to possess sulfate-conjugating activity. Neither has transport activity been demonstrated in nontransfected MDCK cells.

Our study aimed to investigate the possible presence of seasonal changes in platelet phenolsulfotransferase (ST) in a group of 20 healthy, drug-free subjects of both sexes between 24 and 37 years of age. Blood samples were taken four times a year in the period immediately following the equinoxes and the solstices. The results showed that both Sts underwent seasonal changes: the lowest values were found in autumn and in winter, and the highest in the summer.

In primary monocultures of adult rat liver parenchymal cells (PC), the activities of the xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes microsomal epoxide hydrolase (mEHb), soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH), glutathione S-transferases (GST), and phenolsulfotransferase (ST) were reduced after 7 d to values below 33% of the initial activities. Furthermore, the gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC), measured after microinjection by dye transfer, decreased from 90% on Day 1 to undetectable values after 5 d in monoculture. Co-culture of PC with nonparenchymal rat liver epithelial cells (NEC) increased (98% on Day 1) and stabilized (82% on Day 7) the homotypic GJIC of PC.

The activities of monoamine oxidase and phenolsulfotransferase in the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary gland of spontaneously hypertensive rats and the normotensive control (Wistar Kyoto rat) rats were investigated. The monoamine oxidase activity (determined using dopamine as substrate) in both these tissues was not significantly different between the normo- and hypertensive animals. Hypothalamic phenolsulfotransferase does not sulfate-conjugate dopamine at pH of 6.
