Early diagnosis and treatment are critical to preventing HIV-related complications and transmission for adolescents and young adults with HIV. The Metropolitan Atlanta Community Adolescent Rapid Testing Initiative (MACARTI) was a single-center, prospective, nonrandomized, interventional control group study incorporating motivational interviewing psychotherapy strategies with community outreach, HIV testing, and intensive case management. This substudy of MACARTI examined how the motivational interviewing and case management components influenced psychological distress, proactive coping, HIV/AIDS stress, and HIV stigma in association with HIV disease markers (HIV viral load and CD4 T-cell counts). Ninety-eight adolescents and young adults with HIV ( = 21.5 ± 1.8, range 18-24) were allocated to either the standard of care ( = 49) or MACARTI ( = 49) arms, and results were compared between these two groups. Baseline and follow-up surveys measured psychological distress, proactive coping, HIV/AIDS stress, and HIV stigma. MACARTI arm assignment was associated with statistically significant reductions in psychological distress ( = .016), HIV/AIDS stress ( = .023), and the use of more reflective coping ( = .016) and strategic planning strategies ( = .001) during the first 6 months. These results did not remain significant at 1-year follow-up but may still provide support for the integration of psychotherapy strategies into HIV identification, linkage, and retention efforts in the future. The aim of this quality improvement project was to provide multisession trainings that teach the fundamentals of motivational interviewing (MI) to inpatient behavioral health care workers who lack education and proficiency in these techniques. MI is a therapeutic communication approach that explores a person's mixed feelings or ambivalence and aims to encourage a positive behavior change. It was first developed for patients struggling with substance use disorders to assist them in making decisions regarding their sobriety.

Physical activity during pregnancy can lower the odds ratio of developing GDM and offer numerous health benefits for mothers and infants. However, the prevalence of physical inactivity among pregnant women worldwide is high.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in 2023 released a guideline for evaluating and treating children and adolescents with overweight and obesity. The AAP advocated for a patient-centered, comprehensive ("whole child") approach to evaluation and a treatment regimen that includes a foundation of both motivational interviewing and intensive health behavior and lifestyle therapy, along with adjunctive pharmacotherapy and referral of adolescents with severe obesity to bariatric surgery. This article reviews the diagnosis of pediatric obesity and provides an update on the latest evidence and expert recommendations for evaluation and treatment of this condition.
