An individual's ability to respond to and align with the behavior of others is a fundamental component of social behavior. Zebra finches form lifelong monogamous pair bonds; however, zebra finches are also gregarious and can form strong social bonds with same-sex conspecifics. Here, we quantified behavior during brief 10-min reunions for males and females in five types of social conditions: monogamously bonded opposite-sex partners, familiar same-sex, familiar opposite-sex, novel same-sex, and novel opposite-sex dyads. We analyzed these interactions in three ways. First, we quantified overall activity levels (call and movement rates) for each individual. Second, we measured how coordinated calls and movements were by calculating (a) the percent difference in activity rates as an estimate of how similar calling and movement activity were between individuals within a dyad, and (b) the sliding correlation coefficients for time-stamped calls and movements for each dyad. Finally, we described multimodal behavioral profiles of coordination using principal component analyses. Overall, females were more active than males. For both females and males, activity levels as well as the coordination of calls and movements were significantly affected by social condition. In general, monogamous partners, female familiar same-sex dyads and familiar opposite-sex dyads were the most coordinated. This effect of familiarity shows that moment-to-moment behavioral coordination can be influenced by prior social experiences. Quantifying patterns of coordination or social synchrony may prove valuable for understanding the effects of social experience on brain and behavior. Effect of Pilates exercises on symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome in women: a randomized controlled trial.

Arch Physiother

December 2024

Department of Physical Therapy for Cardiovascular and Respiratory Disorders, Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University, Giza - Egypt.

Objective: The treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is challenging, calling for therapeutic strategies other than pharmacological treatment. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of Pilates exercises on IBS symptoms and severity, frequency of complete spontaneous bowel movements, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and body weight in women with IBS.

Methods: Sixty women with IBS, aged 20-45, completed this study.

Social associations across species during nocturnal bird migration.

Curr Biol

January 2025

Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14850, USA; Actions@EBMF, New York, NY 10006, USA.

An emerging frontier in ecology explores how organisms integrate social information into movement behavior and the extent to which information exchange occurs across species boundaries. Most migratory landbirds are thought to undertake nocturnal migratory flights independently, guided by endogenous programs and individual experience. Little research has addressed the potential for social information exchange aloft during nocturnal migration, but social influences that aid navigation, orientation, or survival could be valuable during high-risk migration periods.

Dog-mediated rabies is endemic in India. The country records the highest mortality due to dog-bite-related rabies despite the availability of interventions to prevent deaths. We present a case study of the death of a 59-year-old man in a suburban town of Northeast India after a dog bite from an owned pup.

Background: The digital phenotyping tool has great potential for the deep characterization of neurological and quality-of-life assessments in brain tumor patients. Phone communication activities (details on call and text use) can provide insight into the patients' sociability.

Methods: We prospectively collected digital-phenotyping data from six brain tumor patients.
