Subwavelength gratings have been of great interest recently due to their ability to eliminate multiple orders. However, high index contrast ( Δ n ∼ 3 ) is typically achieved using metals or high-index dielectrics surrounded by vacuum in order to maintain good optical selectivity. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally realize a selective subwavelength grating using an index contrast of Δ n ∼ 1.2 without vacuum. Despite its low index contrast, our simulation and experiments show that good optical selectivity is achieved using the same physics as subwavelength gratings made of high-index contrast. Such polymer-based encapsulated gratings are easier to scale up for use in large-area applications such as photovoltaics and lighting.

Metatronic circuits extend the concept of subwavelength-scaled lumped circuitry from electronics to optics and photonics, providing a distinctive design paradigm for versatile optical nanocircuits. Here, based on the design of optical nanocircuits using metatronics concept, we introduce a general approach for dispersion synthesis with metasurface to achieve high-selectivity filtering response. We theoretically and numerically demonstrate how to achieve basic circuit lumped elements in metatronics by tailoring the dispersion of metasurface at the frequency of interest.

Camouflage is a common technique in nature, enabling organisms to protect themselves from predators. The development of novel camouflage technologies, not only in fundamental science, but also in the fields of military and civilian applications, is of great significance. In this study, we propose a new type of deep-subwavelength four-layered meta-coating consisting of Si, Bi, Si, and Cr from top to bottom with total thickness of only ∼355 nm for visible-infrared compatible camouflage.

Super-resolution ultrasound (SRUS) has evolved significantly with the advent of Ultrasound Localization Microscopy (ULM). This technique enables sub-wavelength resolution imaging using microbubble contrast agents. Initially confined to 2D imaging, ULM has progressed towards volumetric approaches, allowing for comprehensive three-dimensional visualization of microvascular networks.

Active metasurfaces enable dynamic manipulation of the scattered electromagnetic wavefront by spatially varying the phase and amplitude across arrays of subwavelength scatterers, imparting momentum to outgoing light. Similarly, periodic temporal modulation of active metasurfaces allows for manipulation of the output frequency of light. Here we combine spatial and temporal modulation in electrically modulated reflective metasurfaces operating at 1,530 nm to generate and diffract a spectrum of sidebands at megahertz frequencies.

Ultrasound imaging is extensively used in biomedical science and clinical practice. Imaging resolution and tunability of imaging plane are key performance indicators, but both remain challenging to be improved due to the longer wavelength compared with light and the lack of zoom lens for ultrasound. Here, the ultrasound zoom imaging based on a stretchable planar metalens that simultaneously achieves the subwavelength imaging resolution and dynamic control of the imaging plane is reported.
