Published: February 2020

Two new azaphilone derivatives, comazaphilones G and H (1 and 2), together with eight known analogues (3-10), were isolated from an endophytic fungus Penicillium variabile. Their structures were established on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. Compounds 1, 2 and 4-10 were tested their nitric oxide inhibitory activities in lipopolysaccharide-activated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Compounds 1, 2 and 4-9 showed significant nitric oxide inhibitory activities with IC values ranged from 4.35 ± 0.05 to 40.52 ± 0.47 μM.

, a filamentous fungus widely distributed across terrestrial and marine environments, can produce a diverse array of natural products, including alkaloids, polyketones, and polyketide-terpenoids. Among these, chrodrimanins represented a typical class of natural products. In this study, we isolated three previously undescribed pentaketide-sesquiterpenes, 8,9--chrodrimanins (-), along with eight known compounds (-).

Maize moldy and spoilage due to microbial growth is a significant challenge in grain storage. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a zinc oxide nanocomposite, ZnO@mSiO, prepared in our previous research, in inhibiting mold growth and preserving maize cell quality. The results demonstrated that ZnO@mSiO could effectively inhibit the growth of dominant microorganism, Aspergillus flavus, Talaromyces variabilis, Penicillium citrinum and Fusarium graminearum, in maize storage.

Three new compounds, including one steroid named penivariod A (1) and two polyketides penivarides A and B (2 and 3), as well as six known derivatives (4-9) were isolated from Penicillium variabile EN-394, a fungus afforded from the marine red alga Rhodomela confervoides. Their structures were elucidated by analysis of the HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR. The absolute stereochemistry was determined by X-ray crystallographic data, gauge-independent atomic orbital (GIAO) NMR shift calculation followed by DP4+ analysis combined with calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD).

Penicillium is one of the most important postharvest pathogens of citrus fruits worldwide. It induces blue or green mold disease, a decay that can lead to significant economic losses during storage. Based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences, seven Penicillium species and one closely related Talaromyces variabilis were identified from 30 rotten samples of citrus fruits marketed in Qena.

is an ascomycetous genus widely distributed in the natural environment and is one of the dominant fungi involved in the decomposition of mangroves, which can produce a variety of antitumor compounds and bioactive substances. However, in mangrove ecosystems there is no complete genome in this genus. In this study, we isolated a fungus strain named HXQ-H-1 from coast mangrove (Fujian Province, China).
