Yeast sex-hormone whole-cell biosensors are analytical tools characterized by long-time storage and low production cost. We engineered compact β-estradiol biosensors in S. cerevisiae cells by leveraging short (20-nt long) operators bound by the fusion protein LexA-ER-VP64-where ER is the human estrogen receptor and VP64 a strong viral activation domain.

The electrochemical biosensor has brought a paradigm shift in the field of sensing due to its fast response and easy operability. The performance of electrochemical sensors can be modified by coupling them with various metal oxides, nanomaterials, and nanocomposites. Hydrogen peroxide is a short-lived reactive oxygen species that plays a crucial role in various physiological and biological processes.

Ramadan fasting in adolescents with epilepsy: Seizure control and behavioral outcome.

Seizure

December 2024

Neurology Department, Kasralainy Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University, Cairo, Egypt. Electronic address:

Data about the effect of Ramadan fasting on seizure control among adolescents with epilepsy (AWE) is scarce. Several psycho-behavioral problems have also been encountered in this teenage group. This study aimed to assess seizure frequency and behavioral outcomes after Ramadan fasting in a sample of AWE METHODS: In this prospective study, AWE who completed fasting during Ramadan 2024 were evaluated regarding the seizure frequency of each type during Shaban (the month immediately preceding Ramadan) and Ramadan.

Background: Obesity and metabolic syndrome are major public health concerns linked to cognitive decline with aging. Prior work from our lab has demonstrated that short-term high fat diet (HFD) rapidly impairs memory function via a neuroinflammatory mechanism. However, the degree to which these rapid inflammatory changes are unique to the brain is unknown.

Detecting shielded special nuclear material, such as nuclear explosives, is a difficult challenge pursued by non-proliferation, anti-terrorism, and nuclear security programs worldwide. Interrogation with intense fast-neutron pulses is a promising method to characterize concealed nuclear material rapidly but is limited by suitable source availability and proven instrumentation. In this study we have pioneered a demonstration of such an interrogation method using a high-intensity, short-pulse, laser-driven neutron source that offers potential benefits compared to conventional neutron sources.
