The content of sulfur dioxide derivatives in cells is closely related to life and health. Therefore, it is essential to detect the content of sulfur dioxide derivatives in cells under physiological conditions to ensure life and health. In this paper, a novel sulfur dioxide derivative fluorescent water-soluble probe ((E)-1,1,3-trimethyl-2-(2-(naphthalen-1-yl)vinyl)-1H-3λ-benzo[e]indole, TNB) was synthesized by using naphthalene formaldehyde (1) and 1,1,2,3-tetramethyl-1H-3λ-benzo[e]indole (2) as raw materials. Based on the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism of the naphthalene ring to benzoindole, TNB exhibits very weak fluorescence emission in PBS buffer (pH 7.4). The olefin unit of TNB can be combined with HSO/SO with high selectivity to make the π-π conjugate interrupt. ICT is blocked, TNB produces a strong fluorescence emission, and the color visible to the naked eye changes from yellow to colorless. The effect of TNB on HSO/SO can be completed in 40 s, the fluorescence intensity is increased by 91 times, and the detection limit is as low as 0.089 μM. It is expected to be able to rapidly detect low levels of sulfur dioxide derivatives in cells, which has important application prospects in maintaining life and health.

Sulfur dioxide (SO), a pervasive air pollutant, poses significant environmental and health risks, necessitating advanced materials for its efficient capture. Nanoporous organic polymers (NOPs) have emerged as promising candidates; however, their development is often hindered by high synthesis temperatures, complex precursors, and limited SO selectivity. Herein, we report a room-temperature, cost-effective synthesis of carbazole-based nanoporous organic polymers (CNOPs) using 1,3,5-trioxane and paraldehyde, offering a significant advancement over traditional Friedel-Crafts alkylation methods.

This study aimed to evaluate the concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) around the Qom (a province in Iran) combined cycle power plant in relation to seasonal variations and fuel type from December 2014 to May 2015. Passive sampling was used in three monitoring sites around the power plant to assess noncarcinogenic health risks associated with exposure to SO2 and NOX. Results showed the higher concentrations of NOX and SO2 in winter than in spring.

Traditionally, α-olefins have been regarded as non-homopolymerizable substrates in textbook examples. However, they have the ability to copolymerize with sulfur dioxide, leading to the creation of alternating copolymers. These commodity poly(olefin sulfone)s exhibite a wide array of applications.

In the era of global warming, the conversion of carbon dioxide into high-value products has become a widely scrutinized emerging mitigation strategy. Metalation of bpy-containing MOF-253 led to the synthesis of MOF-253-0.5Ag, which acts as an efficient catalyst for the carbonylative cyclization of CO with alkyne molecules (such as propynyl alcohols and propynyl amines) at room temperature and ambient CO pressure, yielding the corresponding α-alkyl cyclic carbonates and oxazolidinones, thus endowing the catalytic system with bifunctional characteristics.

Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) is famous for the clean utilization of organic wastes without SO emission. Investigating the decomposition mechanism of sulfone compounds, the dominant organic sulfur compounds of organic wastes, in supercritical water (SCW) is conducive to the development of SCWG technology. Herein, the comparative decomposition mechanism of phenyl vinyl sulfone (PVS), diphenyl sulfone (DS), and benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxide (BD) are explored via experiments and density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations.
