Objective: Periodontal dental ligament mesenchymal stem cells (PDLMSCs) play a major role in periodontal tissue regeneration by the neoformation of root cementum and alveolar bone. These cells are highly heterogeneous, and many present low potential to renovate the hard tissue damaged by periodontal disease. A previous study found that the low osteoblast/cementoblast (O/C) differentiation potential of PDLMSCs is related to high asporin (ASPN) expression, which was identified as a negative regulator of PDL cells differentiation and mineralization, suppressing BMP-2-induced O/C differentiation.

Identification of fibrosis-associated biomarkers in heart failure and human cancers.

J Transl Med

November 2024

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, The First People's Hospital of Changzhou, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, 213000, China.

Background: Heart failure (HF) and cancer share common risk factors and pathophysiological mechanisms, including fibrosis. Identifying biomarkers and therapeutic targets for both conditions is crucial.

Materials And Methods: RNA sequencing data from HF patients were analyzed to identify 12 genes associated with myocardial fibrosis.

Fumarate Restrains Alveolar Bone Restoration via Regulating H3K9 Methylation.

J Dent Res

November 2024

Department of Oral Sciences, Sir John Walsh Research Institute, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand.

Nonresolving inflammation causes irreversible damage to periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) and impedes alveolar bone restoration. The impaired tissue regeneration ability of stem cells is associated with abnormal mitochondrial metabolism. However, the impact of specific metabolic alterations on the differentiation process of PDLSCs remains to be understood.

Hyperplastic ovarian stromal cells express genes associated to tumor progression: a case study.

BMC Vet Res

September 2024

Forschungsinstitut für Nutztierbiologie (FBN), Wilhelm-Stahl-Allee 2, 18196, Dummerstorf, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on hyperplastic stromal cells from a Holstein cow's left ovary, which show a fibroblast-like shape and stop growing after the 8th culture passage.
  • It confirms the non-cancerous nature of these cells through various assays and indicates they do not produce estradiol, while vimentin is prominently expressed in their cytoskeleton.
  • A gene expression analysis revealed 1396 differentially expressed genes, with significant activation of pathways related to cell proliferation and mitochondrial function, suggesting the cells have altered growth characteristics.

Characterization of serum proteomic and inflammatory profiling at early stage of iron deficiency in weaned piglets.

Anim Nutr

September 2024

Laboratory of Animal Nutritional Physiology and Metabolic Process, Key Laboratory of Agro-Ecological Processes in Subtropical Region, Institute of Subtropical Agriculture, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changsha 410125, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on analyzing the serum proteomic and inflammatory responses of weaned piglets experiencing iron deficiency.
  • Twelve piglets were divided into a control group receiving iron supplements and a low-iron (L-Fe) group without supplements, leading to significant reductions in serum iron and various blood components in the L-Fe group.
  • Further analysis showed changes in gut structure and increased expression of iron transporters alongside the identification of differentially abundant serum proteins that impact metabolism and immune response, with some key proteins showing altered expression levels.
