Article Abstract

The synthesis, crystal structure, and photophysics of a series of neutral cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes bearing substituted N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ancillary ligands ((CN)Ir(R-NHC), where CN and NHC refer to the cyclometalating ligand benzo[]quinoline and 1-phenylbenzimidazole, respectively) are reported. The NHC ligands were substituted with electron-withdrawing or -donating groups on C4' of the phenyl ring (R NO (), CN (), H (), OCH (), N(CH) ()) or C5 of the benzimidazole ring (R = NO (), N(CH) ()). The configuration of was confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The ground- and excited-state properties of - were investigated by both spectroscopic methods and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. All complexes possessed moderately strong structureless absorption bands at ca. 440 nm that originated from the CN ligand based */CT (charge transfer)/d,d transitions and very weak spin-forbidden MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer)/LLCT (ligand-to-ligand charge transfer) transitions beyond 500 nm. Electron-withdrawing substituents caused a slight blue shift of the */CT/d,d band, while electron-donating substituents induced a red shift of this band in comparison to the unsubstituted complex . Except for the weakly emissive nitro-substituted complexes and that had much shorter lifetimes (≤160 ns), the other complexes are highly emissive in organic solutions with microsecond lifetimes at ca. 540-550 nm at room temperature, with the emitting states being predominantly assigned to π,π*/MLCT states. Although the effect of the substituents on the emission energy was insignificant, the effects on the emission quantum yields and lifetimes were drastic. All complexes also exhibited broad triplet excited-state absorption at 460-700 nm with similar spectral features, indicating the similar parentage of the lowest triplet excited states. The highly emissive was used as a dopant for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) fabrication. The device displayed a yellow emission with a maximum current efficiency (η) of 71.29 cd A, a maximum luminance () of 32747 cd m, and a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 20.6%. These results suggest the potential of utilizing this type of neutral Ir(III) complex as an efficient yellow phosphorescent emitter.

A series of electrochemiluminescent (ECL) iridium(III) complexes with the general formula [Ir(CN)(pim)] (where CN = cyclometalating ligands 2-phenylpyridinato (ppy) or 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridinato (dFppy), and pim = 2-(2-pyridyl)imidazole) have been synthesized. In each case, the 2-(2-pyridyl)imidazole ancillary ligand has been modified to facilitate bioconjugation and ECL label development. All complexes exhibit blue-shifted optical and electro-generated phosphorescence relative to the archetypal complex [Ir(ppy)(bpy)] (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine).

Three neutral Pt(II) complexes with diphenylamino-modified 2-phenylpyridine derivatives as cyclometalating ligands and acetylacetone as the ancillary ligand exhibit aggregation-induced phosphorescent emission (AIPE) properties in THF/HO. The crystal structures of the complexes highlight the contributions of non-covalent Pt···Pt interactions and hydrogen bonds to the AIPE properties. These AIPE-active Pt(II) complexes - have been successfully applied to detect picric acid (PA) in aqueous media, affording the lowest limit of detection at 70 nM.

In the present report, a novel dual pH-O sensor based on covalent conjugate of rhodamine 6G and cyclometalated iridium complex with poly(vinylpyrrolidone-block-vinyltetrazole) copolymer is reported. In model physiological solutions the sensor chromophores display independent phosphorescent and fluorescent lifetime responses onto variations in oxygen concentration and pH, respectively. Colocalization studies on Chinese hamster ovary cells demonstrate the preferential localization in endosomes and lysosomes.

Mn-catalysed reactions offer great potential in synthetic organic and organometallic chemistry and the success of Mn carbonyl complexes as (pre)catalysts hinges on their stabilisation by strong field ligands enabling Mn(i)-based, redox neutral, catalytic cycles. The mechanistic processes underpinning the activation of the ubiquitous Mn(0) (pre)catalyst [Mn(CO)] in C-H bond functionalisation reactions is now reported for the first time. By combining time-resolved infra-red (TRIR) spectroscopy on a ps-ms timescale and studies using infra-red spectroscopy, insight into the microscopic bond activation processes which lead to the catalytic activity of [Mn(CO)] has been gained.

The cyclometalated terpyridine complexes [Ru(η-OAc)(NC-tpy)(PP)] (PP = dppb , (,)-Skewphos , (,)-Skewphos ) are easily obtained from the acetate derivatives [Ru(η-OAc)(PP)] (PP = dppb, (,)-Skewphos , (,)-Skewphos ) and tpy in methanol by elimination of AcOH. The precursors , are prepared from [Ru(η-OAc)(PPh)] and Skewphos in cyclohexane. Conversely, the NNN complexes [Ru(η-OAc)(NNN-tpy)(PP)]OAc (PP = (,)-Skewphos , (,)-Skewphos ) are synthesized in a one pot reaction from [Ru(η-OAc)(PPh)], PP and tpy in methanol.
