To assess the impact of a journal club elective course on measures of student's longitudinal performance throughout an accelerated three-year Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum. Students were separated into two groups (those who did and did not complete a journal club elective). The following primary and secondary student outcomes were assessed using hierarchical linear regression analysis: score on the Pharmacy Curriculum Outcomes Assessment (PCOA), overall course grade in the Pharmacotherapeutics IV course, overall course grade in the Research Design and Literature Evaluation II course, and average grade on acute/ambulatory care advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs). One hundred ninety-seven students were included in the study (73 students who completed the journal club elective and 124 students who did not). After controlling for baseline confounders, enrollment in the journal club elective was associated with students scoring 24.5 points higher on their overall scaled score on the PCOA. Enrollment in the journal club elective also appeared to add 2% to a student's overall grade in each of the courses and APPEs. All results were statistically significant. An elective journal club course can significantly improve multiple objective measures of pharmacy student learning. Components of this course, such as reading primary literature, presenting a journal club, learning from peers, and scaffolding of pharmacotherapeutic concepts are important elements to consider when designing a journal club curriculum.

Benzo-fused γ-lactams are fundamental in medicinal chemistry, acting as essential elements for various therapeutic agents due to their structural adaptability and capability to enhance biological activity. In their synthesis, transition metals play a pivotal role as catalysts, offering more efficient alternatives to traditional methods by facilitating C-N bond formation through mechanisms like intramolecular coupling. Recent advances have especially spotlighted transition-metal-catalyzed C-H amination reactions for directly converting C(sp)-H to C(sp)-N bonds, streamlining the creation of these compounds.

Exemplified by successful use in COVID-19 vaccination, delivery of modified mRNA encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles provides a framework for treating various genetic and acquired disorders. However, lipid nanoparticles that can deliver mRNA into specific lung cell types have not yet been established. Here, we sought whether poly(®-amino ester)s (PBAE) or PEGylated PBAE (PBAE-PEG) in combination with 4A3-SC8/DOPE/cholesterol/DOTAP lipid nanoparticles (LNP) could deliver mRNA into different types of lung cells in vivo.

Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, Prince of Wales Hospital, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China; Jockey Club Centre for Osteoporosis Care and Control, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China. Electronic address:

Background: The potential modifying roles of dietary patterns in the association between body mass index (BMI) and mortality in older adults remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the stratified and combined associations of dietary patterns and BMI with all-cause, cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality.

Methods: This prospective cohort study included 3982 Chinese community-dwelling older adults between 2001 and 2003.

Background: The average fibre consumption of 4-10-year-old children in the UK is 14.6 g per day, with only 14% of these children reaching the 20 g recommended by the SACN (UK Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition), and this 'fibre gap' may be most pronounced in communities with the lowest socioeconomic status. School breakfast clubs target children from disadvantaged communities, but their provision may favour lower-fibre foods, due to perceptions that children will reject higher-fibre foods.
