AI Article Synopsis

  • The study investigated the impact of Phase 1 periodontal treatment on the salivary RANKL and OPG ratio in patients with severe chronic periodontitis.
  • Saliva samples from 13 affected patients and 14 healthy individuals were analyzed, revealing a significantly higher ratio in the periodontal disease group, which decreased after treatment.
  • The findings suggest a direct link between the RANKL/OPG ratio and disease severity, indicating that this ratio could help predict treatment success, though further research with larger samples is needed.

Article Abstract

Background: RANKL and OPG play an important role in bone resorption. The ratio increases in periodontal disease. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Phase 1 periodontal treatment on the salivary ratio in patients with severe chronic periodontitis.

Materials And Methods: Saliva samples were collected from 13 patients with severe chronic periodontitis and 14 healthy controls at baseline and then four weeks after the treatment using unstimulated spitting. The salivary levels of RANKL, OPG and ratio were investigated using the ELISA method.

Results: The findings of this study showed that the mean ratio was significantly higher in the patients with periodontal disease than in the healthy controls (=0.001). Also, the ratio was significantly higher in the patients with a higher mean CAL (=0/004). The comparison of the salivary ratio in patients with periodontal disease before and four weeks after the treatment showed a significant reduction in this value four weeks after the periodontal treatment (=0/001).

Conclusion: The results of this study showed a direct relationship between the ratio and the severity of periodontal disease. Phase 1 of periodontal treatment was found to be effective in reducing the ratio. In other words, the ratio can be a good predictor of treatment success. Further long-term studies with larger sample sizes are required for confirming these results.

Objectives: This paper aims to review the immunopathogenesis of Diabetes-associated periodontitis (DPD) and to propose a description of the research progress of drugs with potential clinical value from an immunotherapeutic perspective.

Materials And Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus and the Cochrane Library. Inclusion criteria were studies on the association between diabetes and periodontitis using the Boolean operator "AND" for association between diabetes and periodontitis, with no time or language restrictions.

Periodontitis, a common chronic inflammatory condition caused by bacteria, leads to loss of attachment, resorption of alveolar bone, and ultimately tooth loss. Therefore, reducing bacterial load and fostering alveolar bone regeneration are essential components in the treatment of periodontitis. In this study, we prepared smaller-sized Ag-Metal Organic Frameworks (Ag@MOF) and loaded with sodium alginate (Alg) hydrogel for periodontitis treatment.

Background: Periodontitis (PD) is a common chronic inflammatory oral disease that severely affects patients' quality of life. Fisetin has been shown to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in various biological systems.

Methods: This study first identified the molecular targets of fisetin for PD through network pharmacology analysis.

Background: Maintenance of oral health, prevention, and health promotion stand as primary competencies for dental graduates. Consequently, it is necessary to promote such an approach in dental schools, which are traditionally focused on treatment, to improve the attitude and practice of students in the field of prevention, the final result of which is the reduction of oral and dental diseases in patients. The study aimed to design Integrated Oral Health Care Pathways (IOHCPs) for adults and children referred to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), School of Dentistry.
