With the continuing interest in new magnetic materials for sensor devices and data storage applications, the community needs reliable and sensitive tools for the characterization of such materials. Soft X-rays tuned to elemental absorption edges are a depth and element sensitive probe of magnetic structure at the nanoscale, and scattering measurements have the potential to provide 3D magnetic structural information of the material. In this work we develop a methodology in transmission geometry that allows one to probe the spatial distribution of the magnetization along the different layers of magnetic heterostructures. We study the in-plane/out-of-plane transition of magnetic domains in multilayer thin film systems consisting of two layers of NiFe top and bottom, and a 50 repeat Co/Pd multilayer in the centre. The experimental data are analysed by simulating scattering data starting from micromagnetic simulations, and we find that the out of plane domains of the Co/Pd multilayer intrude into the NiFe layers to a greater extent than would be expected from micromagnetic simulations performed using the standard magnetically isotropic input parameters for the NiFe layers.

We numerically study the spin-wave dynamics in an antidot lattice based on a Co/Pd multilayer structure with reduced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy at the edges of the antidots. This structure forms a magnonic crystal with a periodic antidot pattern and a periodic magnetization configuration consisting of out-of-plane magnetized bulk and in-plane magnetized rims. Our results show a different behavior of spin waves in the bulk and in the rims under varying out-of-plane external magnetic field strength, revealing complex spin-wave spectra and hybridizations between the modes of these two subsystems.

A multilayer structure with a high-quality (Bi,La)(Fe,Co)Omultiferroic thin film/[Co/Pd] perpendicular magnetic thin film dots was fabricated for demonstrating magnetization reversal of [Co/Pd] dots under an applied electric field. Although the magnetization direction of the multiferroic thin film was reversed under the electric field, the magnetic properties of the multiferroic thin films were generally low. If the multiferroic thin film in this structure can control the magnetization direction of the highly functional magnetic thin film under an electric field, high-performance magnetic devices with low power consumption are easily obtained.

Ordered creation and motion of skyrmions with surface acoustic wave.

Magnetic skyrmions with a well-defined spin texture have shown unprecedented potential for various spintronic applications owning to their topologically non-trivial and quasiparticle properties. To put skyrmions into practical technology, efficient manipulation, especially the inhibition of skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE) has been intensively pursued. In spite of the recent progress made on reducing SkHE in several substituted systems, such as ferrimagnets and synthetic antiferromagnets, the organized creation and current driven motion of skyrmions with negligible SkHE in ferromagnets remain challenging.

Magnetic skyrmions are prime candidates for the next generation of spintronic devices. Skyrmions and other topological magnetic structures are known to be stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) that occurs when the inversion symmetry is broken in thin films. Here, we show by first-principles calculations and atomistic spin dynamics simulations that metastable skyrmionic states can also be found in nominally symmetric multilayered systems.

Advanced machine learning techniques have unfurled their applications in various interdisciplinary areas of research and development. This paper highlights the use of image regression algorithms based on advanced neural networks to understand the magnetic properties directly from the magnetic microstructure. In this study, Co/Pd multilayers have been chosen as a reference material system that displays maze-like magnetic domains in pristine conditions.
