Patterned structural color photonic crystals (PCs) based on periodic photonic nanostructures have attracted great interest in developing high-performance sensors and other smart optical materials as well as tunable structurally colored fashion textiles. However, previously reported patterned PCs with both high color saturation and tough mechanical strength were difficult to achieve, which restricts their practical applications. Herein, arbitrarily patterned silica/polyurethane acrylate (SiO/PUA) inverse opal photonic crystals (IOPCs) with high color saturation and tough mechanical strength were innovatively designed and fabricated by writing with photopolymerizable PUA "ink" on a self-assembled hollow SiO PC template. The high color saturation of the prepared SiO/PUA IOPCs originated from the high refractive index contrast between the encapsulated air-filled core and the SiO/PUA composite skeleton. The cross-linked flexible PUA matrix tightly warped the self-assembled hollow SiO nanospheres together, endowing the obtained SiO/PUA IOPCs a structural color pattern with tough mechanical strength. The structural colors of SiO/PUA IOPCs could be finely tuned by regulating their basic parameters, and a redshift in the resultant structural color was observed due to an increase in the lattice constant when increasing the core size and/or shell thickness of the hollow SiO nanospheres.

Butterfly wing eyespots are developmentally determined at the early pupal stage, when prospective eyespot focal cells underneath the pupal cuticle focal spot function as eyespot organizers in the pupal wing tissue. Here, we performed light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to describe cellular structures of pupal wing tissue with an eyespot organizer immediately after pupation using the Blue Pansy butterfly Junonia orithya. The pupal forewing dorsal epidermis was a pseudostratified monolayer of vertically elongated epidermal cells.

In this study, a convenient method was proposed for the synthesis of thymine-capped mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) using strong hydrogen bonding in non-protonic solvent. Previous research has suggested that numerosity estimation and counting are closely related to distributed and focused attention, respectively (Chong & Evans, WIREs Cognitive Science, 2(6), 634-638, 2011). Given the critical role of color in guiding attention, this study investigated its effects on numerosity processing by manipulating both color variety (single color, medium variety, high variety) and spatial arrangement (clustered, random). Results from the estimation task revealed that high color variety led to a perceptual bias towards larger quantities, regardless of whether colors were clustered or randomly arranged.
