AI Article Synopsis

  • The RhinAsthma Patient Perspective (RAPP) was translated into Spanish to evaluate its effectiveness in measuring health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in asthma and allergic rhinitis patients.
  • A study involving 149 adult patients showed that the Spanish version maintained good internal consistency, reliability, and validity metrics, confirming its effectiveness.
  • Overall, the adapted RAPP is a reliable tool for assessing HRQoL in Spanish-speaking patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis in clinical settings.

Article Abstract

Objective: the RhinAsthma Patient Perspective (RAPP) is the only available tool to assess HRQoL in daily practice. The aim of this study is to cross-culturally validate the RAPP in Spanish.

Methods: The RAPP was translated into Spanish. Adult patients receiving usual care for asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR) were recruited consecutively and assessed twice with a four-week interval between visits to test the psychometric properties of the questionnaire.

Results: 149 patients (62.8% female) with a mean age of 37.7 years completed the study. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the uni-dimensional structure of the questionnaire. Internal consistency (0.73 at visit 1; 0.87 at visit 2), convergent and discriminant validity (p<.05 at both visits) were satisfactory. Reliability was confirmed by an ICC of 0.69 and a CCC of 0.74. Responsiveness was supported by a significant association with VAS (r=0.28, p<0.003) and ACT (r=-0.35, p<0.01). The minimal clinical difference (MID) value in the analyzed population was 2.

Conclusions: The Spanish version of RAPP was demonstrated to have satisfactory psychometric properties and is a valid, reliable and responsive tool for the assessment of asthma and AR HRQoL in clinical practice.

Background: The interplay between physical and psychological symptoms frequently affects the health-related quality of life of asthma patients.

Participants And Procedure: This research aimed at assessing the psychological status of 60 patients attending their first/second doctor visit at which they were diagnosed with allergic asthma. Information on psychological distress was collected through the Symptom Questionnaire (SQ), personality traits were described through Cattell's 16-Personality Factor Questionnaire (16-PF), stress-related behavior was detected through the P Stress Questionnaire (PSQ), and the perceived quality of life was described with the Rhinasthma questionnaire.

Biomarkers for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients with rhinitis and/or asthma are urgently needed. Although some biologic biomarkers exist in specialist care for asthma, they cannot be largely used in primary care. There are no validated biomarkers in rhinitis or allergen immunotherapy (AIT) that can be used in clinical practice.

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a major non-communicable disease that affects the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients. However, data on HRQoL and symptom control in AR patients with comorbid asthma (AR + asthma) are lacking.

Methods: In this multicentre, cross-sectional study, patients with AR were screened and administered questionnaires of demographic characteristics and health conditions (symptoms/diagnosis of AR and asthma, disease severity level, and allergic conditions).

J Allergy Clin Immunol Pract

March 2022

Respiratory Unit for Continuity of Care, Istituti di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico, Ospedale Policlinico San Martino, Genova, Italy.

Background: RhinAsthma Patient Perspective (RAPP) is the only validated tool for assessing of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) related to asthma and rhinitis in individual patients.

Objective: To compare the HRQoL burden among countries and explore the usefulness of RAPP as a complementary measure in disease management.

Methods: In this post hoc analysis of the RAPP International Study, the enrolled population was clustered into patients with controlled rhinitis and controlled asthma (CA/CR), uncontrolled rhinitis and controlled asthma (CA/UR), controlled rhinitis and uncontrolled asthma (UA/CR), and uncontrolled rhinitis and uncontrolled asthma (UA/UR).
