We present a modified nudged elastic band routine that can reduce the number of force calls by more than 50% for bands with nonuniform convergence. The method, which we call "dyNEB", dynamically and selectively optimizes images on the basis of the perpendicular PES-derived forces and parallel spring forces acting on that region of the band. The convergence criteria are scaled to focus on the region of interest, i.e., the saddle point, while maintaining continuity of the band and avoiding truncation. We show that this method works well for solid state reaction barriers-nonelectrochemical in general and electrochemical in particular-and that the number of force calls can be significantly reduced without loss of resolution at the saddle point.

The rotational spectra of a mixture of 2,4-pentanediol (PDL) isomers, comprising both the meso isomers [(2R, 4S) and (2S, 4R)] and the racemic isomers [(2R, 4R) and (2S, 4S)], were recorded using a chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectrometer coupled to a supersonic jet expansion. The conformational landscapes of meso- and racemic-PDL were examined using the Conformer-Rotamer Ensemble Sampling Tool and high-level quantum chemical calculations, generating 26 and 25 conformers, respectively. Five sets of rotational transitions were observed and assigned, with two attributed to meso-PDL and the remaining three attributed to racemic-PDL.

Guanine quadruplexes (GQs) play crucial roles in various biological processes, and understanding their folding pathways provides insight into their stability, dynamics, and functions. This knowledge aids in designing therapeutic strategies, as GQs are potential targets for anticancer drugs and other therapeutics. Although experimental and theoretical techniques have provided valuable insights into different stages of the GQ folding, the structural complexity of GQs poses significant challenges, and our understanding remains incomplete.

Exotic polar topologies such as polar skyrmions have been widely observed in ferroelectric superlattice systems. The dynamic motion of polar skyrmions under external forces holds promise for applications in advanced electronic devices such as race-track memory. Meanwhile, the polar skyrmion motion has proven to be challenging due to the strong skyrmion-skyrmion interaction and a lack of a mechanism similar to the spin-transfer torque.

The modification of metallic surfaces with adsorbed atoms of a second metal is presented as an ideal method for producing electrocatalysts. In this work, we examined the role of Au atoms in the reactivity of Pt surfaces and their effect on the adsorption and diffusion of CO using first-principles calculations. Our comprehensive study utilized density functional theory (DFT) to analyze a variety of adsorption sites on single-crystal Pt structures, encompassing open and staggered configurations.

We introduce a methodological framework coupling machine-learning potentials, ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD), and kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) to draw a comprehensive physical picture of the collective diffusion of hydrogen atoms on metal surfaces. For the benchmark case of hydrogen diffusion on a Ni(100) surface, the hydrogen adsorption and diffusion energetics and its dependence on the local coverage is described via a neural-network potential, where the training data are computed via periodic density functional theory (DFT) and include all relevant optimized diffusion and desorption paths, sampled by nudged elastic band optimizations and molecular dynamics simulations. Nuclear quantum effects, being crucial for processes involving hydrogen at low temperatures, are treated by RPMD.
