Eight male subjects aged 18-24 years were treated with 0.5 mg of isotretinoin day-1 kg-1. After 4 weeks levels of cholesterol (P less than 0.05) and triglyceride (P less than 0.05) were increased and levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol were decreased (P less than 0.05). Concentrations of aspartate aminotransferase (P less than 0.01) and gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (P less than 0.01) were higher after treatment; increased alkaline phosphatase and a reduction in bilirubin levels did not reach statistical significance. Values for thyroxine were reduced after isotretinoin and free thyroxine index was lower (P less than 0.01). Measurements of salivary clearance of antipyrine and levels of alpha 1-acid glycoprotein were lower after treatment but these differences did not reach statistical significance. The findings suggest that there is a small decrease in hepatic microsomal-enzyme activity after isotretinoin and that the unwanted effects on lipids, liver and thyroid function are unlikely to be due to hepatic microsomal-enzyme induction.

Background: Cerebral blood flow normally places a limit on the magnitude of brain vascular permeability (P) that can be measured in vivo. At normal cerebral blood flow, this limit falls at the lower end of lipophilicity for most FDA-approved CNS drugs. In this study, we report on two methods that can be used to overcome this limitation and measure brain vascular permeability values that are up to ~1000 times higher using the in situ brain perfusion technique.

Objective: To examine cross-sectional relationships between biomarkers of environmental enteric dysfunction (EED), an acquired subclinical condition of the small intestine, and anthropometric and developmental outcomes among children in Lusaka, Zambia.
Study Design: Serum samples were collected from 240 children aged 27 to 35 months enrolled in a cluster-randomized trial assessing the effects of growth charts and small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements on linear growth. Samples were analyzed using the 11-plex Micronutrient and EED Assessment Tool, which incorporates 2 biomarkers of EED, namely intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP), a marker of epithelial damage, and soluble CD14 (sCD14), a marker of microbial translocation.
