Published: October 2019

Objective: to identify the predicting factors and sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative related value of nursing diagnosis Ineffective Breathing Pattern among patients of an intensive care unit.

Method: cross-sectional study. A logistic regression was fitted to assess the simultaneous effects of related factors.

Results: among the 120 patients, 67.5% presented Ineffective Breathing Pattern. In the univariate analysis, the related factors were: group of diseases, fatigue, obesity and presence of bronchial secretion, and the defining characteristics were: changes in respiratory depth, auscultation with adventitious sounds, dyspnea, reduced vesicular murmurs, tachypnea, cough and use of the accessory musculature to breathe. The mean age of patients with was higher than those without this diagnosis. The defining characteristics reduced murmurs had high sensitivity (92.6%), specificity (97.4%), negative related value (86.4%) and positive related value (98.7%). The related factors of Ineffective Breathing Pattern were the related factors fatigue, age and group of diseases.

Conclusion: fatigue, age and patients with a group of diseases were related factors of Ineffective Breathing Pattern in this study. Reduced vesicular murmurs, auscultation with adventitious sounds and cough may be defining characteristics to be added in the international classification, as well as the related factors bronchial secretion and group of diseases.

Extubation failure rates are notably high in patients in neurointensive care. Ineffective cough is the variable independently associated with extubation failure, but its quantification remains challenging. Patients with primary central nervous system injury requiring invasive mechanical ventilation were included.

Objective: Our study aimed to determine the clinical profile and pulmonary function of pediatric patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). We also characterized the stages of progression of the disease and determined their potential association with spirometry variables.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we used data obtained from a review of medical records of all pediatric patients (0-18 years old) with DMD seen in a multidisciplinary neuromuscular clinic of a tertiary government hospital from August 2018 until March 2020.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) and Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) are exceptionally rare disorders characterized by varied clinical presentations, posing several challenges for clinicians. The concomitant occurrence of LCH and ECD is exceedingly rare and has no known etiology. In this report, we present a rare case of mixed histiocytosis (both ECD and LCH) with multisystem involvement.

Background Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a fatal zoonotic disease distributed mainly in the Northern Hemisphere. At present, its curative treatment relies on surgery, and the development of effective drugs is needed. We previously demonstrated the anti-echinococcal effect of atovaquone (ATV) as a mitochondrial complex III inhibitor in both in vitro and in vivo experiments.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the prevalence of a common bacterium among 100 dyspeptic patients in Zakho City, Iraq, finding an infection rate of 50%.
  • Significant associations were found between the bacterium and factors like increasing age, low hemoglobin levels, and educational level, while no major differences were seen in gender, smoking, or other lifestyle factors.
  • Additionally, nearly half of the patients did not respond to standard antibiotic treatment, indicating a potential antibiotic resistance issue and highlighting the need for customized treatment strategies.
