Macular degeneration (MD), which affects the central visual field including the fovea, has a profound impact on acuity and oculomotor control. We used a motion extrapolation task to investigate the contribution of various factors that potentially impact motion estimation, including the transient disappearance of the target into the scotoma, increased position uncertainty associated with eccentric target positions, and increased oculomotor noise due to the use of a non-foveal locus for fixation and for eye movements. Observers performed a perceptual baseball task where they judged whether the target would intersect or miss a rectangular region (the plate).

Internal instability of embankment soils under seepage can occur in two distinct ways: suffusion and suffosion. Suffusion involves the removal of fine particles from the matrix without causing significant disturbance to the soil skeleton, while suffosion is characterized by the movement of fine particles accompanied by skeleton collapse or deformation. In terms of dam safety, suffosion poses a greater threat than suffusion.

Visual motion is a crucial cue for the brain to track objects and take appropriate actions, enabling effective interactions with the environment. Here, we study how the superior colliculus (SC) integrates motion information using asymmetric plaids composed of drifting gratings of different directions and speeds. With both in vivo electrophysiology and two-photon calcium imaging, we find that mouse SC neurons integrate motion direction by performing vector summation of the component gratings.

Hypoxia and lipid metabolism play crucial roles in the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the specific functions of hypoxia- and lipid metabolism-related genes (HLPG) in CRC and their relationships with patient prognosis remain unclear. Differential expression analysis using the TCGA-COAD and GEO databases identified 117 HLPGs through the intersection of the two gene sets.

Introduction: Children growing up in arid and semi-arid regions of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) face heightened risks, often resulting in poor developmental outcomes. In Kenya, the arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) exhibit the lowest health and developmental indicators among children. Despite these risks, some children grow up successfully and overcome the challenges.
