Dioleyldimethylammonium ion was used to construct two-dimensional hybrid structures with clay and the hybrid was shown to possess higher flexibility than that of the hybrid of dioctadecyldimethylammonium and the clay. The important difference between the two surfactant systems was studied by quasi-elastic neutron scattering, confirming the useful characteristics of the presently designed dioleyldimethylammonium-clay over the well-known dioctadecyldimethylammonium-clay for various materials applications.

A highly photoluminescent material was obtained by the incorporation of perylene into an inorganic-organic hybrid film. Octosilicate, a layered alkali silicate, was modified with a cationic surfactant, dioleyldimethylammonium ion, to accommodate perylene molecularly and uniformly. The perylene-doped dioleyldimethylammonium octosilicate films were fabricated by simply casting the toluene solution of perylene with dispersed dioleyldimethylammonium octosilicate on substrates.

Hemin (Fe(3+)) was adsorbed onto synthetic smectite (clay mineral) intercalated with a quaternary alkenylammonium compound, dioleyldimethylammonium chloride (DOA), to form a hemin-smectite-DOA conjugate. The hemin-smectite-DOA conjugate was soluble in organic solvents such as benzene and toluene to form a transparent colloidal solution with a light yellow color. Its absorption spectrum in benzene showed two bands, 600 and 568 nm, in the visible region and a sharp Soret band at 400 nm with the molar extinction coefficient of 7.

An ability to generate a well defined lipid-based carrier system for the delivery of plasmid DNA in vivo requires the characterization of factors governing DNA/lipid interactions and carrier formation. We report that a hydrophobic DNA/lipid complex can be formed following addition of cationic lipids to DNA in a Bligh and Dyer monophase consisting of chloroform/methanol/water (1:2.1:1).
