Endophytic fungi including black aspergilli have the potential to synthesize multiple bioactive secondary metabolites. Therefore, the search for active metabolites from endophytic fungi against pathogenic microbes has become a necessity for alternative and promising strategies. In this study, 25 endophytic fungal isolates associated with Malus domestica were isolated, grown, and fermented on a solid rice medium.

Chemical investigation of a peanut-associated fungal strain IMBC-NMTP01 resulted in isolation and identification of 14 secondary metabolites, including two new, -aspergillusol () and aspernigin (), and 12 known compounds: pyrophen (), 2-(hydroxyimino)-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid (), aspergillusol A (), rubrofusarin B (), nigerasperone A (), fonsecin (), TMC-256C1 (), pyranonigrin A (), orlandin (), nigerasperone C (), asperpyrone A (), and 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxylic acid (). Compounds , showed cytotoxicity toward all six human cancer cell lines, including HepG2, KB, HL-60, MCF-7, SK-Mel2, and LNCaP, with IC values ranging from 8.4 to 84.

Mycological investigation of various foods (mainly cowpea, groundnut, maize, rice, sorghum) and agricultural soils from two states in north-central Nigeria (Nasarawa and Niger), was conducted in order to understand the role of filamentous fungi in food contamination and public health. A total of 839 fungal isolates were recovered from 84% of the 250 food and all 30 soil samples. Preliminary identifications were made, based on macro- and micromorphological characters.

In a previous study, raw cashew kernels were assayed for the fungal contamination focusing on strains belonging to the genus Aspergillus and on aflatoxins producers. These samples showed high contamination with Aspergillus section Nigri species and absence of aflatoxins. To investigate the diversity of secondary metabolites, including mycotoxins, the species of A.
