The trend in the formation of postvaccinal antibodies (Ab) to a mixture of S. pneumoniae polysaccharides (PS) was studied in 100 Pneumo 23-vaccinated children and adolescents with type 1 diabetic (T1D) (Group 1, n = 72) and its combination with the subunit vaccine Grippol (Group 2, n = 28). Following 1-1.5 months, the protective level of Ab l 40 conventional units (CU/ml) was revealed in 95.1 and 85.2% of Groups 1 and 2, respectively; and after 1 year, this was in 55.1 and 37%, respectively (p > 0.05). The level of formation of IgG Ab to a PS mixture did not depend on the age of patients, the duration of T1D, the presence of late diabetic complications. A relationship was found between the formation of postvaccinal Ab and their baseline level: in patients with very low (< 10 CU/ml) and low (10-20 CU/ml) levels of Ab after administration of pneumococcal vaccine, the level of IgG Ab to a S. pneumoniae PS mixture increased by 8.8-4.1 times in the early periods and exceeded the baseline levels by 4.8-2.8 times, respectively. The putative protective level of IgG AB to a S. pneumoniae PS mixture is proposed to be l 20 CU/ml.

Previously, to obtain antigen-presenting self-assembling protein nanoparticles (SAPN), we developed a biosynthetic platform combining the self-associating peptide LKD and the SUMO protein. In the current work, the immunogenic SUMO was replaced with an artificial 30 amino acid long peptide pepA1. The immunogenic properties of the pepA1-SAPN were tested in mice using the pneumococcal PhtD19 and ovalbumin OVA antigens in the absence of adjuvants.

Cardiovascular and infectious diseases both feature among the leading causes of death among men and women in the world. The pathophysiological pathways of infection and cardiovascular disease intersect, and there is a bidirectional relationship between the two. Vaccines are available for the most common infectious diseases affecting older adults, such as influenza, pertussis, pneumococcal disease, herpes zoster, COVID and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Objectives: The Philippine National Immunization Program guidelines recommend using the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) among senior citizens. We conducted cost-effectiveness analyses to assess the impact of replacing 2-dose PPV23 with PCV13 in all adults aged ≥60 years and expanding the recommendation to include PCV13 for adults aged 18 to 59 years at elevated risk of disease (moderate-/high-risk).
Methods: Lifetime risks and costs of invasive pneumococcal disease, nonbacteremic pneumococcal pneumonia (NBPP), and expected impact of vaccination were projected using a probabilistic cohort model.

Invasive infections by encapsulated bacteria are the major cause of human morbidity and mortality. The liver resident macrophages, Kupffer cells, form the hepatic firewall to clear many encapsulated bacteria in the blood circulation but fail to control certain high-virulence capsule types. Here we report that the spleen is the backup immune organ to clear the liver-resistant serotypes of (pneumococcus), a leading human pathogen.

serotype 23B, a non-vaccine serotype, has shown an increasing prevalence and penicillin non-susceptibility among carriage and invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) isolates. Recently, a novel penicillin non-susceptible genotype has emerged, named 23B1. In the framework of the Belgian pneumococcal carriage study, we studied the prevalence of 23B/23B1 among 586 23B strains (2016-2022) in 172 day care centers from 6- to 30-month-old children and among 130 pediatric 23B IPD isolates (2007-2021).
