A Roadmap of Responses to Asymmetry Stress in Lipid Membranes.

The selective insertion of membrane-impermeant amphiphiles such as detergents, (lipo)peptides, drugs, etc. into the leaflet of a membrane causes an imbalance between the intrinsic areas of the and leaflet, referred to as asymmetry stress or differential stress. The literature provides individual mechanisms of how membranes respond to such stress, which are relevant to membrane remodeling processes and leakage phenomena.

Mechanobiology of 3D cell confinement and extracellular crowding.

Cells and tissues are often under some level of confinement, imposed by the microenvironment and neighboring cells, meaning that there are limitations to cell size, volume changes, and fluid exchanges. 3D cell culture, increasingly used for both single cells and organoids, inherently impose levels of confinement absent in 2D systems. It is thus key to understand how different levels of confinement influences cell survival, cell function, and cell fate.

We measure the response of open-cell polyurethane foams filled with a dense suspension of fumed silica particles in polyethylene glycol at compression speeds spanning several orders of magnitude. The gradual compressive stress increase of the composite material indicates the existence of shear rate gradients in the interstitial suspension caused by wide distributions in pore sizes in the disordered foam network. The energy dissipated during compression scales with an effective internal shear rate, allowing for the collapse of three data sets for different pore-size foams.

To further investigate the properties of Incoloy825/P110 bimetallic composite seamless pipes, thermal deformation analysis was conducted on their billets. The thermal deformation and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior of Incoloy825/P110 bimetallic composite materials were studied through hot compression tests at deformation temperatures (850-1150 °C) and strain rates (0.01-10 s).

Faced with all kinds of serious ecological and environmental protection problems in today's society, development must take the sustainable and green road. Nanocellulose aerogels with the advantages of wide resource of raw materials, low cost, good biocompatibility and biodegradation, are good thermal and sound insulation materials. Herein, a versatile composite aerogel with good thermal stability and heat-insulating property was prepared by freeze-drying method using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), waterborne polyurethane (WPU) and sepiolite (SEP) as substrates.
