Nitrogen removal from wastewater is a worldwide environmental problem. Photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) were reported to have a great potential in treating varieties of nitrogen-contaminated wastewater. However, their nitrogen metabolic mechanism is still unclear, which was further explored in this work. The results showed that PSB can efficiently utilize NH-N, NO-N and NO-N. Over 90% nitrogen removal efficiencies were obtained under suitable condition. 35 ~ 51% of removed nitrogen was transformed to N and NO. In addition, basically no mutual transformation occurred between NH-N, NO-N and NO-N in PSB, which is different from other biological technologies. Combining with the analysis of functional gene groups, it indicated that there might be a new direct nitrogen transformation pathway, i.e. NH might be directly oxidized to N/NO in nitrogen metabolism of PSB, which breaks the limitations of existing technologies, and proposed a new understanding of nitrogen metabolism in PSB.

Unlabelled: The intestinal diarrheal pathogen colonizes the host terminal ileum, a microaerophilic, glucose-poor, nitrate-rich environment. In this environment, respires nitrate and increases transport and utilization of alternative carbon sources via the cAMP receptor protein (CRP), a transcription factor that is active during glucose scarcity. Here we show that nitrate respiration in aerated cultures is under control of CRP and, therefore, glucose availability.

The circadian clock mediates metabolic functions of plants and rhythmically shapes structure and function of microbial communities in the rhizosphere. However, it is unclear how the circadian rhythm of plant hosts regulates changes in rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities and nutrient cycles. In the present study, we measured diel changes in the rhizosphere of bacterial and fungal communities, and in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling in 20-year-old tea plantations.

Plants and microorganisms coexist within complex ecosystems, significantly influencing agricultural productivity. Depending on the interaction between the plant and microbes, this interaction can either help or harm plant health. Microbes interact with plants by secreting proteins that influence plant cells, producing bioactive compounds like antibiotics or toxins, and releasing molecules such as N-acyl homoserine lactones to coordinate their behaviour.

Electronic address:

Zn is a common heavy metal pollutant in water bodies and accounts for the largest proportion of heavy metal pollutants in many rivers entering the sea. This study investigated the growth and physiological response characteristics of Sargassum fusiforme under different divalent Zn ion concentration gradients. We observed that low concentration Zn treatment (<2 mg L) exerted no significant effect on the growth rate, photosynthesis, and nitrogen metabolism-related indicators of S.

Untargeted LC-HRMS analyses reveal metabolomic specificities between wine yeast strains selected for their malic acid production.

The alcoholic fermentation of wine is mostly achieved by the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae that display a large variability for their ability to consume or produce malic acid. To better characterize the metabolism of such group of strains we explored their non-volatile metabolome using an untargeted LC-HRMS approach. The chemical classes and the putative structures of several hundred compounds where annotated using MS2 spectra using the SIRIUS software.
