Electronic properties of graphene/ZnO interface have been theoretically investigated by applying first principles density functional theory calculations. This interface is demonstrated to have interesting electrical, optical and chemical properties and therefore, is employed in different applications. In our investigation the interface between graphene and different ZnO surfaces such as polar Zn-terminated [Formula: see text] and O-terminated [Formula: see text] surfaces as well as nonpolar [Formula: see text] surface are considered. Different interface properties such as equilibrium atomic structure, binding energy, charge transfer and band alignment are calculated for these interfaces. The calculated binding energies between graphene and different ZnO surfaces are within the range of van der Waals or physical adsorption. The results clearly reveal the essential role of oxygen density at the interface. The O- and Zn-terminated ZnO surfaces show the lowest and highest binding energies, respectively. The amount of charge transfer and the direction of interfacial dipole are also dominated by the number of oxygen atoms at the graphene/ZnO interface. Calculations for the interfacial band alignment reveal that a high/low density of oxygen atoms at the interface results in a Schottky/Ohmic contact. It is also shown that inducing oxygen vacancies at an oxygen rich interface leads to the lowering of the Schottky barrier.

Conventional light-driven antimicrobial strategies of zinc oxide (ZnO) are limited by inadequate illumination in dark environments. In this study, carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (MCNC) mediated flower-like ZnO (C@Z) with self-promoted reactive oxygen species release under dark is fabricated. The adsorption of Zn ions on MCNC prompts the growth of ZnO along the (002) crystal plane, forming a flower-like hybrid with superior dispersibility and oxygen vacancies compared to MCNC-free ZnO, which exposes the (100) plane.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carcinogenic compounds resulting from incomplete burning of organic materials. This work describes the successful layer-by-layer fabrication of a novel zinc oxide nanocomposite made of zinc oxide nanoparticles, aniline, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes on a stainless steel wire by electrodeposition. The coating and extraction conditions were screened, optimized, and validated using factorial design and central composite design, respectively.

ZnO/MO (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Sn, In, Ga; [M]/([Zn] + [M]) = 15 mol%) nanofiber heterostructures were obtained by co-electrospinning and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The sensor properties of ZnO and ZnO/MO nanofibers were studied toward reducing gases CO (20 ppm), methanol (20 ppm), acetone (20 ppm), and oxidizing gas NO (1 ppm) in dry air. It was demonstrated that the temperature of the maximum sensor response of ZnO/MO nanofibers toward reducing gases is primarily influenced by the binding energy of chemisorbed oxygen with the surface of the modifier's oxides.

With growing environmental concerns and the need for sustainable energy, multifunctional materials that can simultaneously address water treatment and clean energy production are in high demand. In this study, we developed a cost-effective method to synthesize zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires via the anodic oxidation of zinc foil. By carefully controlling the anodization time, we optimized the Zn/ZnO-5 min electrode to achieve impressive dual-function performance in terms of effective photoelectrocatalysis for water splitting and waste water treatment.

Infections continue to pose significant challenges in dentistry, necessitating the development of innovative solutions that can effectively address these issues. This study focuses on creating coatings made from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) enriched with zinc oxide-silver composite nanoparticles, layered to Ti6Al4V-titanium alloy substrates. The application of these materials aims to create a solution for the abutments utilized in complete dental implant systems, representing the area most susceptible to bacterial infections.
